Tow Loop / Tow Strap

Postby Apu » Tue Oct 11, 2011 2:19 pm

Just to be a little different, and not wanting to put my shin into a tow hook everytime I nuzzle up to my car, I'd like to fit these to Apu.

Anyone used these before?

I haven't had a look at the tow fitments on the car (NB8C) but is it just a matter of unbolting the stock tow points or do they need to be cut off?

Hey mate, they are pretty cool. do they just hang down permanently and flap around in the wind?

Pretty much so, but I've seen some other cars cut a slot in the bumper and tuck them in there.

I was thinking of that or securing it (through a slot) with a small velcro strap. That way, it stays visible...just for the bling!

Just reviving this old thread as I've got myself some tow straps and will be fitting them to Apu. The front is easy enough - remove tie-down points and replace with tow strap.

The rear is a bit more tricky. I'm thinking of one of the rails behind the bumper but that might necessitate cutting a hole in the rear bumper for the strap to come through. I'm OK with cutting a slot, but would of course prefer not to.

Has anyone done something else different (in terms of rear fitment) with a tow strap?

You shouldn't need to cut the bumper. On the passenger side there's a rail/bar that comes down that is used to mount tow hooks. It's already got a couple of holes drilled, but you can put another hole in if you want to mount it to the side of that block.

Have a look at page 3 of this pdf:
http://www.rennenmetal.com/manuals/1331.pdf

The tow hook comes out horizontal from that bar and just clears the bumper. So if your strap was mounted at the same point it should still clear the bumper provided you're not being towed at too harsh an angle.

You can see my tow hook here mounted to that bar:

Thanks Spence. I'll have another look.

Thing is, I have an additional lip on the bottom of my rear bumper...should have mentioned that!

I'm not sure if cutting the bumper would totally resolve the problem though. The loop is always going to be mounted in-board and therefore going to pivot from an angle that will touch the bumper unless you're towing at an angle near horizontal. A tow hook (rather than loop) solves that issue by clearing the bumper or at least bringing the point at which the rope pivots further out.

Best not to bury the car in the gravel trap

Bumping up!!

Apu did you ever get the rear strap to work?
I have a set of tow straps and the front is easy enough but was thinking the same as you in cutting a small slit in the rear bumper but if that could be avoided, All the better!!

No Mark. Decided against it, and sold the other tow straps (I couldn't get it to fit in the Integra too).

It's just a matter of ducking under the bumper anyway, so couldn't be bothered with all that effort.
