Legalities of numbers on cars

Postby kelvinator » Thu Sep 01, 2011 12:42 pm

I've done a quick search to no avail.
Just wondering if anyone knows the legalities of displaying numbers on a car for road use.

I have a passion for the look of vintage race cars and was thinking about applying some of this thinking to the look of my car.

Was thinking along the lines of my favourite outlaw 356 as pictured below.

It used to be an issue in Vic some years ago, but not sure of the current situation here or in other jurisdictions. May be PM Arty, noting he's in Vic, but appears to run a number on his NC:

Doesnt the 356 look great!

Likewise, i know it used to be an issue in SA. Not sure if it still is though.
How about a number which is 'taped' out!!

Nothing I can find in any of the Acts or Regulations or ADRs prevent you from having numbers on the side.

I know that there are CAMS items that state any numbers should be removed or covered at the end of competition when driving on the road (I've never looked them up, I just used to put electrical tape X over the door plates on the rally car), but other than that you should be OK.

As I said, call tech. standards and tell them you want to make a replica Herbie and see if they can find any legislation that says you can't.

Hi "kelvinator" I've had them on for 2 years now and been pulled up by the police a few times but it had nothing to do with the numbers 8) and there was no mention of them so I wouldn't worry about it.
In my case they are magnetic so can be removed in seconds if required to do so and "kelvinator" the AU flags are actually fridge magnets,
which may be of interest to you

My dad checked with the NSW police a couple of years ago and they had no trouble with numbers on cars, the Sargent he spoke to even gave my dad his card and said to call him if another officer was giving him grief.

Just make sure any mods on your car are legal. Nothing says "pick me" like a set of numbers on the doors!

He he. Yeah, car will be otherwise nothing out of the ordinary. I've always been more show than go with all my cars.
Thanks again for the advice. 8)
