Nah I agree completely man. Those JDM cages look like more harm than good. In my opinion, anything bolted together with those little flange bits is going to be weak as hell. Factor in that Cusco safety 21 cages are alloy and not thick enough to meet cams regulations as well.
Are any of those even tested? I've heard a lot about Japans gruesome reputation with safety standards...

I don't mean to be picky; some of the videos and pictures posted are quite convincing of the safety of the Hard Dog bars, but I was particularly interested in the BD and MX5+ bars - just curiosity really. I'm not questioning the integrity of either design; I'm just curious to see if anyone's actually been in the situation they are designed for.

Big thread here with links to a few other bits of info: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=45995

Fortunately there are very few (if any at all) people that have had to test a BD or Plus bar. I think there was someone on here that was rear ended by a 4X4 that rode up the back of the car and was stopped by their BD bar.

The Hard Dog bar is similar in construction hence the comparison to BD and Plus bars.

I would take the something is better than nothing stance. My helmet always sat proud of my BD bar on my old car but I would rather that than nothing at all.

I cant see them being tested in any way that they would not fail...maybe they would pass as a clothes airer or something.

Yep those tabs are weak as...well a very weak thing. The bolts are taking a load they cant handle, there is no triangulation of the open spaces in it, the feet are to small to take any load and those 'dash dodger' front legs would just bend in a roll over.

Look at the pictures of Japanese drift and trackday cars and the build standards are terrifying. Harnesses with mounting angles that would split you in half in a crash, reclining seats used in 'pro' drift cars.

What scares me the most about those cages is this:

Look at tabs.... They're VERY thin and look like they'll just snap in an accident. The way I see it, if you can crash hard enough to crumple the pillars then those tabs aren't going to hold up. I have no objection that the bolts are strong but those tabs will tear straight out like card.

More grueling than that, say the tiny welds holding those tabs do split. Factor in the amount of bars and that's a lot of metal flying around the cabin. Plus I agree with you on the bent dash bars... I always thought you can guage a good roll bar by the amount of triangles in it's design. I see almost none in those.

I've seen the harness stuff you speak of too! That stuff is mental.... You'd think Japan would be up there when it comes to safety standards.
LOL at the reclining seats in pro drift too.

while i don't dispute that a proper welded ROPS is far superior, i wouldn't be so quick to dismiss those JDM bolt-in ROPS as completely useless either.
