Went to the Hunters via the Putty Rd today with a group of friends.
Had no problem the whole way until I got the Broke Rd where there some roadworks and an opposing semi-trailer decided to race through the 40kms zone on 60kms.
Whilst it was a miracle that nothing struck the body, my windscreen now has a chip in it the size of a 10cents piece.
What made it worst was the scorching heat today and after my coming out of the cellar-door, I've discovered that there's now a small crack that runs for about 10cm in length.
I'm going to take it to O'Brien first thing in the morning to see whether they can fix it but just incase they can't:
1) Does anyone know where I can source a 2nd-hand windscreen (I've never seen it sold from a mx5 wreckage)
2) What about new?
3) How much would it put me back for a 2nd-hand or new windscreen?
I live in Sydney (East) btw... would love some help to fix my poor innocent car

Re: Chipped / Cracked windscreen
Who are you insured with?
Shannon's provide a free windscreen replacement if im not mistaken, also pretty sure other companies do as well though some will make you pay of course.
I would ring your insurance company and ask what is their policy regarding windscreen replacement before doing anything.

Ok, insurance policy didn't cover it.
Now really need people's help to source a 2nd-hand windscreen (cause the price of a new one is ridiculous).
Any ideas? Any suggestions on fitters?

Re: Chipped / Cracked windscreen
This is ridiculous... would there be a difference between any of these quotes?:
O'Brien quoted me $550+
Contractor 1 from National Windscreens quoted me $384
Contract 2 from National Windscreens quoted me $240
All prices include fitting and new rubber and on site service.
??? Do I sense that there may be lower quality windscreens?

there are differences in windscreen quality but an expert on the forum said that only specialists are likely to see any problems. You should be able to check with National what screens they are fitting and the difference may come down to individual contractors. I have not checked their website etc but these guys are likely to warrant the screen for defects.

BadBong, just checked my local national outlet and was quoted $215,the same as they did a couple of months ago.My LE has lots of pitting but i will not fit a new one until I have a buyer so got the original quote and have just checked it again.
Amazing ,I would have thought they would have a standard price but obviously not!!

Not only is there lower quality windscreens, but there is more importantly lower quality insurance, i am yet to find an insurance company that gives the lowest premium, salvage options, choice of repairer and a free windscreen per year (if damaged) as Shannons offers.
If you don't have these as basic options i would be asking why not?
Don't laugh, this actually happens! http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=254055

Cause Shannons doesn't offer pay by the month option - ever.
Would definitely go with Shannons in 2012 when money stops falling off the cliff with life commitments.

BadBong i have my two Mx5's and Renault Laguna Diesel with Shannons and I pay by the month and have been doing so for years so it may be worth checking again,

Re: Chipped / Cracked windscreen
Sorry, I meant that they won't let me change the excess amount of lower the annual insurance fee (i.e. higher the excess, lower the costs per month/year)
But will check again tomorrow though
