Something I always wanted to try was to make a 'shortened' tombstone panel for my MX5 when I had it. I always found the center console useless, and this potential modification would mean the console could be removed without having an ugly finishing point to the tombstone panel.
I work in plastics (repairs/refurbishments). It's far from being able to be considered a trade, but not many people work in plastics, and I would like to apply my skills to make a new part available to MX5 owners and enthusiasts.
Essentially, something like this:
What i'd like to know is whether there's an interest in a product like this. I certainly always wanted to make/buy one. I even had a spare panel to do the modification to, but I donated it to another forum member.
I've now sold my MX5, basically due to financial reasons.
I'd like to be able to offer the service of making this modification, to look much like the above picture, with minimal cost.
There is a thread on this forum somewhere about how to make a carpeted center-console, which would obviously compliment the shortened panel quite well.
Another benefit of this might be that I could make the NA6 tombstone panels exactly double-DIN, as opposed to there OEM strange size because of the standard cassette/radio.
What I'm requesting is a tombstone panel - any condition, and a little bit of faith, to make a new product available locally.
I certainly wouldn't put a price on it, at least not until I can prove that I can offer a neat, well made (modified) product.
I'd be happy to pay for postage, so that I can have a panel to modify and show to forum members, with the objective being that I could offer a service to alter a members panel with a one-week turnaround including the actual alteration of the part + painting.
My intention is not to make money out of doing this, but simply to offer something new to MX5 owners.
Obviously, there would be a few material costs, including paint and the glue products I'd use.
Including postage both ways, I'd ask for $30 I suppose (assuming postage @ $12 either way), simply to cover costs, if there was to be an interest in my idea.
If you're feeling generous, PM me.
I would like a NA6 or NA8 tombstone panel in any condition; to modify, restore and paint up to look as close to OEM as I could.
I am confident that I would be able to successfully complete an alteration like this.
Please have a bit of faith in me, and donate me your broken, scratched or perfectly healthy dashboard 'tombstone' panel.
Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope you'll consider it.
