Mazda paint codes vs auto shop spray can codes

I need to touch up the paint on my NA in a few spots.

The mazda codes are SU (Red) and 16w (Black).

I looked up the codes in the spray can section of the auto shop, but the book does not contain entries for these codes. Anyone had success matching the spray can codes to the original Mazda codes?

Super cheaps red is a pretty close match to the NA classic red. They have thier own coding. The same red was used with Toyota.....
I have a can under the house somewhere I'll get the supercheap colour no.

You might get a little more sense from specialist automotive paint suppliers. The bigger suppliers of all bits and pieces are often lacking in specialist knowledge.

I purchased a can from Supercheap Auto that was supposed to be the equivalent of Crystal White, to paint my rear mud flaps.

The colour was nothing like Crystal White, not even close.

Maybe my 15 year old paint has faded a lot?

Supercheap colour matched cans (PowerPlus) are a very close match to the original paint. The only problem is that under certain light (especially fluoro), the paint looks completely different. It doesn't have the same reflective/refractive properties as the original and as a result it stands out like a Bruce Lee in a sea of Steven Segals.

Working with the Supercheap paint is relatively easy. As long as you have the right sandpaper etc you can get a nice finish.

On the other hand,
Colour matched pant from an automotive paint shop shats all over the Supercheap stuff. The paint is different (it seems much thinner but much better quality) and also has the added bonus of almost completely self leveling. The colour under all conditions of light is spot on so the only way you would be able to tell is by the finish on the paint. Like the Supercheap stuff, it's a piece of p!ss to get a good finish although you have to wait a bit longer for the paint to properly cure. I resprayed my rear bumper just before i sold my red one and it was the easiest thing ever. I sprayed it, it self leveled, i waited for it to cure, and then i polished it to look as good as new.
Unfortunately i dont have any piccies of work done with this can.

My recommendation: Spend $30 and get a proper colour matched can from an automotive paint shop. Paint quality is drastically better, Better colour match as they use your fuel lid, and the paint is very nice to work with.

Oh and the paint code for the red NA's is "classic red". You should be able to find it if you go with the Supercheap stuff.
