about the lightest ok amps id run are alpines new PDX range, which are about 2kgs.. 2kgs is still alot for me.
not to mention the massive amount of wiring needed.
HUs have 4x18 or so RMS, for powering a set of efficient splits, that can be plenty.

18w RMS from a headunit is not 18w RMS from an amp.
True RMS must be qualified with %THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and a frequency range the power can be supplied over. HU's will look something like 18w RMS 1%THD @ 1,000hz, while an amp will be more like 18w RMS 0.01%THD @ 20-20,000hz. BIG difference
I had my JL Audio splits hooked up to my headunit for a while which is rated at 16wRMS, then went to 2 channels of my Pioneer 4x30w amp. Sure, almost double the power, but the quality at any lever was far far superior then the headunit, no question.
Wiring would be all of 1kg using 8GA for power and ground and lightweight shielded RCA's.
Without knowing what 'mass' you have, most people would be able to drop a few kg's pretty easy to make up for any extra weight in the car, and a tank a fuel weighs in at around 35kg.

kula wrote:sure, i think the 4x18 power will be enough to suprise a few people.
my car has:
no carpet
no sound deadening
no air con
no ps
no softtop
no tow hooks
lightweight seat
and its still too heavy.

Good point mio...kula should be listening to the engine note, not doof doof
