This is a new use of the word cheap with which I am not yet familiar.

The sylfex Auxmod is apparently available locally for $99.

The head unti I put into my 5 a couple of months ago has a USB port in the front, so I can just plug virtually anything with music on it and it plays!

It's amazing how much good music you can put on a 2 Gig memory card.

The unit above allows use of the original head unit and also allows control of playlists etc via the controls on the Steering Wheel..

So its cheap..............compared to others that do the same thing.

The head unit only cost me just over $300 and you can also use the display to go through the tracks etc. and the song titles show up on the screen as well.
You can put the music into folders, and name them, so you can sort by the folders, and when you've found the folder you're looking for, start playing the songs you've put in it.

This head unit is a JVC, and at least now I have full control over the sub and a half decent parametric equaliser.
The most useless thing about it is the remote that comes with it.
Why would you need a remote controlled stereo in an MX-5?

Ha Ha...
I have the same unit!
I just installed it last week in the bmw.
It not only works with memory cards, but also controls ipods the same way with their usb computer cable, charges them too!

$300 from JB Hifi.

The remote is a joke but :P
Huh?

This JVC USB unit sounds very interesting. What's the model number?

The one I have is the KD-G825, but they have cheaper and more expensive models with a USB plug, and Kenwood has also just released a number of new models with the same capability.
I really think it's the future of stereos, especially in cars.

I bought this as it was cheaper than buying a good iPod, and around the same price as putting a 6 stacker on the factory head unit and I've got a few memory cards and USB keys just laying around.
A 1 Gig card or USB key can hold around 300 songs and is certainly easier to carry around than 20 or so CD's.
You can also easily ad or remove tracks and it's very quick too.
Certainly very much faster than buring CD's.
The unit will accept stuff recorded in quite a few different formats too like mp3, wma and others that I don't use, although I find that wma is the better way to go and at 192kB/s, you couldn't tell the difference between the original CD and the copy on the card.

That player sounds great Benny, certainly makes more sense to me than spending nearly $300 on the icelink type adapter for the OEM head unit.

Does the USB key stick out the front of the Head unit ??

Recipe for disaster with kids in the car ! - SNAP

I still like the IPOD idea - especially if the headunit is down low near the gear stick.

Cheers

Yes it does stick out the front of the unit, but I mainly use memory cards, so I've got a tiny little SD card reader which just happened to come with a very short USB cable.
As this is only a single DIN sized unit, I also put an open pocket below the stereo (finally somewhere to put the sunnies!) and the card and the reader just sit in the open pocket.
If I want to use the USB key, I just plug that into the short USB cable and then it also sits in the pocket. The same would go for an i-Pod, if I had one.
Very neat.
I know that some of the Kenwood units have a USB cable coming out from the rear of the head unit, which I guess you can just have dangling out the back of the centre stack, but I'm very happy with the front plug and the short cable.

When I'm at work, I take the card out and plug into my work PC and listen to my music while I work. If someone sends me a song I like, I just add it to the card to play back in the car at my leisure.

I believe the new Lexus LS 460 has a 100Gig hard disk built into it's hi-fi system, so when you load in a CD, it copies it for you so you don't have to carry around your CD's in the car.

Personally, I can see that CD's will be a thing of the past as far as cars go.
They will be seen with the same derision that the in-car record players from the 50's and cassette tapes are now seen.
