Removing gearshift lever knob

Postby Georgeiger » Tue Jul 18, 2006 5:41 pm

Hi, all-
I think I may have misasked my question last Sunday. I have a 1990 Eunos and I have been told that the Eunos is slightly different from the MX5/Miata in some of its detailing. In any event I have begun to suspect that my Eunos gear knob is not screwed on to the shaft. I removed the 5 screws which hold the centre consol down and this allowed me to lift it off enough to take a look at the shaft underneath the spat/gaiter and one of the things I discovered is that you can rotate the knob back and forth very slightly around the shaft without putting any torque on the shaft itself. This strikes me as being inconsistent with having the knob screwed onto the shaft so tightly that you need King Kong to get it loose. Any ideas out there because I have a very nice wooden knob that I think would go well with my Nardi wheel and brake lever handle, if I could ever get the old knob off the shaft.
Thank you, Georgeiger

AFAIK they are all screwed on. The Eunos (Japanese domestic product) has the same gear lever which has a screw thread on top. Maybe the knob (the one on there now) is partly broken inside which is why you're getting some slight play in it.

Make sure it hasn't got a locking grub screw through the side of the knob base onto the lever, then turn that knob anti-clockwise until it submits and comes off

hey Georgeiger

having just changed my gear knob for the third time i know what you are talking about.

you can twist the whole gear shaft left and right without the knob becoming loose. there is a bit of play in the shaft.

JBT is right about them all being screwed in. I have an import Eunos as well.

and yes you're right about it taking the strength of king kong to get it loose.

just keep twisting it and make sure you're twisting the right way. anti clock wise :)
