Hi all I have an early black textured finish hardtop which i need to have painted. Can the rear window be easily removed along with door seals. What is the material likely to be , ? F/glass or plastic ? Was quoted $600 this morning but that seems excessive. I,m in Adelaide.
Cheers

$600 sounds right for a good job from a work shop.
the rear window can be taken out but i don't know about the rubber seals...
I'm going to paint my own when sumer hits again.. or when the air temp is at least above 21 degrees.
$100 at most for black paint and lots of clear coats.

painting a hardtop
Hi Spitty
As astroboysoup says its a summertime job and you can do it for about 100 bucks. I have done it very successfully in malibu gold. I tried to sand off the dipple effect without much luck, so I cleaned the top with wax and grease remover then applied layers of K&N filler/primer until the holes were full. Then it was a matter of rubbing back (I think I used about 450 wet and dry), priming and then applying about four coats of colour followed by two or three of clear. I had to put this much on as I was spraying with 400 gm pressure pack cans and it takes a while to get an even surface because of feathering (lightly wet sanding between coats). When you're happy with that wait for four days for the paint to cure before rubbing back with about 1500 wet and dry. It will be a dull finish which you then bring up to shine with brasso. Take care to make sure the surface is absolutely dry before put any paint on or you will get pinholes. I taped the rear window and door trims - it can be done quite successfully if you take your time.
