So I'm at it again

Postby StanTheMan » Sat May 06, 2006 12:30 am

got a little restless today.......& decided to have a go at spraypainting part of my rear bumper, which had some paint chips when someone was doing some inconsidrate parking somewhere some time back.

As some of you may remember i had a little episode on my front passenger side which was then re modeled by Big Dog & Dave. I was also picking thier brains on how to go about respraing the \"Almost Stoclk 1.6\".
Some of you perfectionists will cringe at this so be warned. I have also had a go at the fron bumper but the result.....Ok but not as encouraging as this.

I was told to make sure you degrease everything before you even start prepping. So thats what i did.
Other point which i never knew was to put a little detergent into the sandpaper water.
So I started sanding the offending part of the bumper bar back. got it nicely prepped. I used 800 first time. Couln't feel the edges with my fingers so must be OK. So i started spraying some clear undercoat for plasic body parts so the actual paint will stick onto the exposed plasic.

waited 1 hr sanded it back with 1200 this time. degreasing in between as well.

moment of truth......sprayed with the red.......nice sweeps....not too fast slow enough for the paint to melt into itself but not run. There is a trick to it. It seems to be the angle, sweeping speed, correct distance away from the object. nice sweeps. Done.....unfortuntely my prepping was total crap.

rubbed it back some more degreased & another coat. Pretty damm good i couln't believe it. There is certainly an art to that.
Here is the corner (it was acutually the other side)

i kind of eased it out so the difference in colour woulnt be quite so noticable. I was pretty impressed with my effort. Stuff it. I did the other side as well. So now, the whole bumper is done.
The paint came out of a $ 8.95 airosol bottle....

Both images were taken after i had finished the whole thing. in the middle there is some rough stuff because i started running out of paint. I'll give it another coat tomorrow & do the other faded bit.

Now i know. This is not really the thing for a whole car. But if i can get reasonable result from a pathetic little spray bottle. I should do allright with the proper respary.

I think I've just gained my confidence to do the whole car. with the propper equipment.

i think well done Stan!

I cant see any problems with that at all. I have been contemplating doing the 'Beaver Panel' and the front facing bits of the mirrors... If i knew i could get a result as good as that, it would have been done already!

Well done mate..

If you could take some photos when doing any other bits, i would love to see what other stages are involved in getting a finished product like that.

Looking good.

The only problem with painting one bit is that you notice all the other bits you could do too. :D

yep Mr Q........and after you paint the whole car, you find the roof looks a bit daggy.......then the headlights look a bit old & dull.............then the interior...........ad infinitum   .............but stan is old & grey enuff to know all this.........& ignore it

yes AJ.....as you said once before......ignorance is bliss....

yes then there is the spoiler. I've got a roof just got to install it.....
I think the roof will go on once the whole car has been sprayed. But the correct way.

using the spray can paint is not all that crash hot especially on the front bumper as it will start to chip away. rear bumper I don't expect these issues but it just got to me. It does look a lot better than chipped faded red paint.

Happy steve. if your mirrors are faded.....just do it .Auto bahn & super cheap use the same brand paint. & its a pretty close match.(in the classic red anyway) It will look better than the faded paint. if you mask up the mirror really well you can get a pretty good result. I took mine apart & did it about 12mths ago.....They are a real pain to get to gether again. In my case the internal bolts had rusted pretty bad. I live near the beach

the mirrors are probably good to start with but do expect chips & things in the long term. especially the front bumper. It really is only temporary.

should go out & mask up now .....but its soo bloody cold.

Took the beaver panel off the car.......& cracked it while i was sanding it down.
forgot.....so pissed offf with myself i didn't take any photos after that.

Its back on the car & i was on a roll ....did the rear spoiler as well.

io can seriously sense the need for some propper equipment.

too right dont expect too many stone chips on the reat bumper & Beaver panel.

get the front sorted & then go for the full respray. In classic red. I decided against Candy aplle red. Probably too ambicious for a first timer.

here is a pic of the rear bits
