You can just superglue a little bit of plastic or aluminium on instead. Theres no load, in fact the latch actually holds the glued on bit on place. Mines still there after 3 years.

Thanks to russs for a great idea, I went out this morning and bought some Selly's steel reinforced putty (about $10), and stuck it onto the end of the lock (same principal as the screw head) and filed it down to fit. Works perfectly,now that driver's side latch is no longer bothering me!
