They meet Aus standards (5 tick program - AS/NZS 1698:2006) and SAI Global Standards if that is of any help.

Yes they do meet Aus standards so can't be all that bad. In fact when I picked one up it wasn't all that heavy and looked quite well made.

I tried picking one up in Aldi today to test the weight. Weighed a ton. Not for cars.

A slight correction. SAI Global is an Australian company that provides standards compliance service (those silver and red stickers), and e-access to Australian and international standards. They don't write the standards and the "five ticks" is their company logo not a "program". I know this because we use their service at work ... and I'm a shareholder.

Personally I have not found weight of the helmet an issue in the car. Maybe i have lucked onto some light ones, but first out I used mid range motorbike ones (now I use a Motorsport one). And I am no gym junkie gorilla

Where weight becomes an issue of course is when you have a harness. Whilst your torso is relatively immobile your neck and head are not and severe injuries can occur. Hence the need for a Hans or similar.

This is why I don't have a harness yet. Roll bar going in in 3 weeks, but until I get a HANS and a helmet with posts, I'm not putting a harness in. I'd rather risk internal injuried from moving in seat with a lap belt than instant death by spinal injury.

They only had medium left when I went and I wasn't happy with the fit.

Aldi Penrith, St Marys and Emu Plains have plenty of large in stock. I tried all 3 shops because I wanted to see if I could find an XL but I found a large that fits me ok.

That's a worry with quality control if there is that much variation in sizing that one large will fit and another won't, how good will it be when you need it??????

Just because it meets AS1698 doesn't mean it will do too much more than pass the test to obtain that accreditation.

I think I was being too fussy as I've never worn a helmet before. Also I might have pulled a medium size helmet out of a large size box as bits and pieces were everywhere at all three locations. If you do buy one make sure you get the correct matching full set.

I bought an XL.
It weighs 1.7kg.
My previous motorbike helmet weighs 1.7kg also.
A motorbike helmet from 20 years ago weighs 1.5kg.
