getting a 5 set up for the nationals

Postby evil_weevil » Sat Sep 04, 2010 9:45 am

Hey guys n gals,
My best mate finally took the plunge and bought an MX5.
he has been doing sprints for a few years too and now wants to get into door to door.

The 5 he just bought has somew already good stuff on it, but to get it built for the nationals to do door to door

what does he need?
off the top of my head...

roll bar - say a brown davis roll bar - is this sufficient?
kill switches/battery isolator
ADR/FIA seat and harness

Is there anything else?

from there...I imgaine its getting it AASA log booked?

race numbers and suit and stuff he already has

does it have to be logged with CAMS as well to do this event?

I assusme to do the regularity you wont need all of the above (but would recomend it?)

Cheers!
Chris

Hi Chris,

The Nationals will be run under a AASA permit so the requirements are a bit more relaxed than with CAMS.

The AASA website is user friendly and most questions are answered on the FAQ page -

http://australianautosportalliance.com/ ... &Itemid=45

If racing and you dont have a CAMS licence you will need a AASA National Racing Licence -

http://australianautosportalliance.com/ ... &Itemid=45

You will also need a medical form filled out by your normal doctor and this is on the application form.
To be sure you have the knowledge and skills to hold a licence you will need to do an Observed Licence Test (OLT) THis can be done on the Friday of the Nationals. If you have competed in at least 3 speed events (supersprints, club track days, etc) you send these results in and get Mike Hicks to sign off and you dont need to do the OLT.

If just doing regularity and you dont have a CAMS L2S licence you will need a Club Racing Licence -

http://australianautosportalliance.com/ ... &Itemid=45

If you dont have a CAMS logbook you will need a AASA vehicle passport -

http://australianautosportalliance.com/ ... &Itemid=45

Basic mods required for a vehicle passport include -

ROLL CAGE - BD one fine
FIRE EXTINGUISHER
MIN 4 POINT HARNESS (I'd recommend a 5 point as a min)
STD FACTORY SEAT FINE (again I'd recommend a proper race seat)
BATTERY ISOLATOR SWITCH
STICKER FOR ISOLATOR SWITCH AND FOR LOCATION OF BATTERY
SECONDARY BONNET RESTRAINT - THIS CAN CONSIST OF A TETHER STRAP OR THE LIKE (NO NEED TO DRILL HOLES IN YOU BONNET)

does it have to be logged with CAMS as well to do this event?
NO

I assusme to do the regularity you wont need all of the above (but would recomend it?)
CORRECT. If your not sure on regularity contact Mike Hicks

We're all looking forward to seeing you all out there!!

Safest bet is to check out the wheels and tyres forum. There's are *show off your wheels* sticky threads which give you some idea what you can get away with. If it hasn't been done yet you'll likely need to roll the guards though.

Not sure what your budget is, but these are very good wheels.

Those 6UL are great but WWWAAAYYYYY outside my budget

I picked up a set of 15" rims for $300 which the semis will go on!

Car is getting a once over this weekend including Colling Pro radiator and hoses updated. Hopefully order brakes next week and BD roll bar soon after!!
