In several motorsport pics I see something apparently sticking out of the bottom of the passenger door of various cars.

What is it?

I wondered the same thing when I did a trackday at Phillip Island for the first time in April. It looks like a housebrick wrapped in a shopping bag that is stuck hanging out of the door . Turns out it is a Dorian transmitter used for laptiming. In NSW, they are much smaller and are usually placed in a more discrete location under the body. The big old original ones are still used in Victoria.

You can buy the mounting brackets from Dorian Industries. About $9 ea.
You permanently mount this to the car (I've screwed mine to the front airdam) and then the transponder clips in to the mount with a small pin to retain it.
Takes all of 5 secs to clip in or out

I dont have any pics on my car, but the mount in question is the orange thing in the left of the box below.

And its bolted to the front bumper in the red circled area. On the flat plastic bit behind the painted front section.
