Rollcages & Other Tarmac Rally Questions
Id like to do this http://www.mountainmotorsports.com.au/ - in the MX one year.
Only id like to know if it needs a full cage - all it says is refer to the AASA regulations... and the ones on the AASA website don't mention it..

IBelieve me from experience when things go wrong in tarmac rally it hurts. We flipped end on end twice and rolled about 4 times.
This is the cage in our new build.
My advise - You Need a Full Cage
All that said Tarmac Rally is fantastic fun! Good luck and enjoy

Maybe this is what you need ...

Here are the "Vehicle & Apparel Requirements" for QR and Lakeside which run under the AASA banner:
http://www.qldraceways.com.au/Administr ... pparel.pdf
It basically states that the "minimum roll over protection must meet AS/NZ standards AS 1636.1-1996"
I know there are guys running half cages, but I've always had a full cage and wouldn't feel real comfortable racing in anything that didn't. It may cost a bit more and add some weight to the car but how much is your life worth?

Ok sounds like a full cage is the go.
Is there such a thing as a removable cage? (i thought most welded in)
I don't mind if its a few hours job to remove it, but i want to be able to revert it to a road car after ive done a tarmac rallysprint in it..

Yep, my first race car had a Bond six point bolt in cage. Not sure if they'd make one for an MX5 but it would be worth asking.

Soft...the silver turbo has a Brown Davis 1/2 cage and no side intrusion bars.

I didn't say I wouldn't race one, just that I'd feel a bit uncomfortable. When do I get a drive?

Seriously I hated it when I thought about it. Thankfully it has a full cage being fitted at the moment for Oran Park and Phillip Island.

Ok might contact bond then and see what they can do.
Thinking of getting going with some club level motorsport with the intention of doing some tamac rally stuff in a year or two (like the mt buller sprint i linked to) - The missus even wants to Nav for me

I doubt I'd be here today posting photos of my crashed car if I had'nt had a decent full cage in a tarmac rally. It bent in that crash but it did its job once and saved my life. Unlike on the track where it's relatively safe and predictable there are trees, power poles, culverts, embankments and the list goes on. You dont plan to crash but if you do you want to be covered. I never ever thought this could happen to us. Buy the best cage + any other safety gear you can afford because as per above your life is worth it.
