Yeh!!! Cyclops can NOW race in CAMS events!!!!

Postby tbro » Wed Jul 01, 2009 9:18 pm

Hey all,
Well as the heading states CAMS has finally agreed in principle to allow people with low or no vision in one eye to have a race license.

As some will know I applied for my license to do the nationals at Warwick, but CAMS said no way bucco!!
Their doctor, Geoff went on to explain that the FIA where changing the rules and had informed CAMS that they had to allow people with mono vision the opportunity to get their race license, as racers in the UK can!! So Geoff pushed mine and another applicants medicals to his CEO, who then had their specialist devise what the extra test would be required, so back off for more test and more time taken while my specialist did the test, type up reports and email them to CAMS specialist who agreed that we could have our race license with some stipulations!!!So finally the license was approved by CAMS CEO and I received a phone call and email to confirm what had happened and the restrictions that would apply, well after Warwick
The first and by far the weirdest one I've ever encountered was that I have to do 2 race meetings, be observered by a CAMS stewart, who must report to CAMS that I can race safely (DOH!!) and I must provide race results, then CAMS will provide me with my provisional!!
NOW how do you go racing without a CAMS license???? I have to do AASA or IRACE!!!!!!
Bloody cheeky bastards, just hope that QLD Raceway see the point of working with me!!
Now to get my race suit etc and a new seat and I'm ready for Top Gear events!!

So if you or someone you know has been knocked back for a CAMS license prevoiusly, let them know that now they can apply for one and if they can satisify the new rules, they can go racings in CAMS events.

See ya on the track!! :D :D

Terry

Terry, what did they actually tell you was the reason for rejecting your initial application?

I was speaking to a mate of mine about your case; he has a friend with one eye (wears an eye patch and all) who rallies with a CAMS licence. I've met the bloke before and have seen his rally car, but it didn't click until he told me.

He has been racing for years though, so might have got his licence before the rules got stricter (lost his eye fairly early on in life...).

Glad to hear you'll be out on the black stuff with us... 8)

This only became an issue about 15 years ago, up till then one eye was enough. I recall talking to a chap with one eye who raced with us - I asked him if it had ever presented a problem. "Only once. Running in a hill climb where the start line is next to a beach where there were a couple of birds sunbaking in the nuddy. Couldn't see the track at all!!"

I think we're avoiding the real issue, they are obviously doing their best to stop you driving in an effort to encourage you to become an official. Given your one eyed view you'd be their ideal candidate.

I would have thought with the anti-discrimination laws that CAMs would have to prove that you'd be unsafe rather than the other way around.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Hey Dave
Yep, could have taken CAMS to the Anti-discrimation court, has actually been done before!! and CAMS lost!!
Once a precedent has been set it is quite simply to prove discrimination.
Trouble is, as usual, is the cost involved for barristers etc, the cost would be the cost of a top race car and entry fees for a year!!! as I want to go racing to have a fun I wasn't going to blow a heap of money I don't have to prove a point!
I would rather work with CAMS than against them, so now others in the same position have a chance of getting a circuit license.

As for me being an official only, would rather eat brussels sprouts.

Now where am I going to mount me parrot,me hearties!!!

Hey All,

Well youse had better hide ya bloody cars, cause as from today, me has got a CAMS PCC license :D :D :D

So beware at EC in May the Cyclop is racing.

But on a serious note:

If you do now anyone who has thought about getting their CAMS license tell them to do it. Myself and a bloke from Tassie (did know his name but ) have done the hard yards and gone through the bullshit and red tape and with the help of Geoff from CAMS have now opened the door for others to follow. So now they have no excuses for not going out and playing.

ME is a happy fella
