Hi All.
As I understand it at the moment, only the steel Brown Davis cage for the MX5 is CAMS approved. Chroming it is also not an option as far as I know.
Does anyone know whether the same policy applies to nickel plating a steel cage??
I have seen some nickel plated steel on cars and at loks fantastic, but would it still be CAMS legal?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chris

You need to look at schedule J on www.cams.com.au - I can't find any mention of it in last years manual. Powder coating and painting are the way to go unless you want a show car.
A final note I point out very often about cages. The ROPS compliance procedure is that until fitted in your car, inspected and approved - no cage is CAMS approved - regardless of what you hear. Merely fitting a steel X brand bar does not constitute a CAMS approved ROPS - it must go through the approval process and be granted the sticker. And then, it only matters, if the car requires a log book for competition.

but check with sam or greg to be sure. just send them an email.
True. It's mentioned in the rules as I recall (ie that it should be CAMS approved), but that's more to stop people buying style bar mousetraps and thinking they'll be safe. I don't think anyone at that level of competition will harass you for it.

From the source.
Thanks for the replies on this one guys!
I have the answer now.
I have been in contact with the chap who builds the cages at Brown Davis, and they will not certify any cage that has been chromed or nickel plated. THis is due to the process possibly causing brittling in the steel.
Fair enough I say!
Looks like satin black powder coat for me!
Cheers

Sounds like I am lucky to be short.........!!!!
