The 2 litre and under sports sedan series officially invites Mazda MX5 racers to join us in the 2007 series. Changes in CAMS rules for 07 mean that any MX5 running a hardtop will be elligable to race in this series, that has been running in Victoria for 20 years.

Why change? Well at the moment, you are racing against 100's of thousands of dollars worh of Porsche, ferrari and alike. This gives the Mazda MX5 racers little chance of winning (no offence intended, just the reality I guess) unless it rains of course.

*By joining us for 07 and onwards, you will be racing against only cars with normally aspirated engines of less than 2 litres in capacity. You have a genuine chance of winning every time you race.

*Entry fees are only $210 for the weekend, getting you 1 practice, 1 qualifying (one lap qualifying) and 5!!! Races.

*1 Lap shootout style qualifying
*Staggered reverse grid racing to give everyone a chance to win
*Pit stop racing, even the pit crew get involved!!
*A class for under 1600cc engined cars
*Modify the cars as much or as little as you like, as long as it stays under 2 litres.

We will even add an MX5 class for your cars, the battle within the race for MX5 Honours.

there didnt seem to be many groups of racing that would let you go so silly with modifications for the mx5.

just wondering is there a power to wight limit for each class?

It's a Victorian Series........and I seriously doubt an n/a MX5 with less than 125rwkw would even be remotely competitive against things with SR20s and the like.

Build a 2F MX5 and race in prodsports - we have 5 x 1 hour races next year in NSW, QLD and Victoria with shorter sprint races as well. Not to mention the MG race meetings and you could be racing every second weekend for a few months of 2007.

Not that I've got anything against our sports sedan breathren - for the record.

the reason for the power to weight question was to clarify your point though exactly, how could an MX5 come close to a stripped out datto with an SR20.

The only example where I can compare a race MX5 to the two litre sports sedan was in 2004 at Phillip Island. My MX5 (Fanta) would have been 4th on the grid in the two litre field. The front runner was only one second faster. Given more experience at PI I think we could have challenged for the lead.

Don't underestimate the mx5 as a race car.

I haven't seen any SR20 powered beasts in the prod sports car races, any particular reason for that? Or is it just that they didn't come out in anything that handles well?

For cossie55 - this class is obviously <2L Nat Asp, but can you do engine swaps and what not? I think a bored out 1.8 would go very well against an sr20. They can't bore it out at all surely cause if they did they'd be over capacity?

In prod sports, you must run the block that the car came out with so you can't do what improved production classes do and stick an SR20 in a 120y - but the 200SX S15s that we have seen are pretty competitive when setup properly. Prod sports is also power to weight so you can go nuts on overbores - as long as it's the right block to start with.

Guys, There is no power to weight ratio requirement. It is do as you like just keep it under 2 litres... Yes there are SR20 powered cars, and Minis, Ford Lazers etc... But there is a minimum weight to stop people going silly making the cars too light... The weights are

680kg under 1300cc
730kg 1300-1600cc
780kg 1600-2000cc

These are racing weights, so include driver...

We have a new rule this year (07) that allows turbo charged engines as long as the engine is still under 2 litres. This means WRX's, 200sx, EVO etc, but they must have a 36mm restrictor and 1200kg minimum weight (their production weight) This should make them compeitive with 700-800kg n/a cars, but not make them uncompetitive. We will revise the restrictor size during the season, if required, to maintiain parity in the class.

But the main thing for you guys, we have one MX5 already, looks like it will be a genuine front runner too. You can modify anything you like on the car, but must run the hard top.

A car that got third outright at winton last season has a pushrod 1600cc engine. I would doubt that he had even 100rw kw. Because all cars need be under 2 litres, handling is more important than outright power, and MX5's handle fantastically.

If you are worried about it, come out to Calder for the first round, under lights on the short track (should be a great event!!) and see how the n/a 1800 MX5 fares in its first outing...

Or class is noit full of big budget cars like the open cars, look at our website and you will see cars, with the most expensive ones worth around $20-25k, most in the teens.. I genuinely dont see any reason why a MX5 couldnt win outright with the right power, weight and driver. Ignoring that, if you get a few of you guys racing together with us, it will be cheaper, and more fun that racing with the Marque sports cars, more racing laps for less money... With Reverse Grids at Calder, one lap shootout qualifying all season and Pitstop racing at Winton.

Yes, it is Vic only, but all are welcome, and we do get competitors from NSW coming down to race with us as for many u/2ltr cars, ours is the only class that they can race in competitively.

Opps, didnt read all the questions, Ill try to answer specifics this time

You can put any engine in any car. Ie 1800 mx5 engine into a 1600.
SR20 into MX5 (why would you bother, the MX5 engine is great, we have one here at MoTeC as a test mule and it is unbreakable)

If you had and 1800, you could bore it out to 2 litres if you like, as long as it stays under 2000 (it has to be 1999.99999 or less, 2 litres and it is considered over)

You could put any under 2 litre engine in the MX5, a Lexus 6 cylinder 2 litre engine even, for example, it is still under 2 litre. We let you play with your car, change whatever you like, have fun, and still come race.

The reason for no power to weight limit, is the power bit. Getting a genuine repeatable power from any dyno is near impossible. All read differently, so weight is the controlling factor for N/A cars. Capacity controls the power.

Thanks Jamie - that explains it a bit better. It definitely sounds like good fun racing. The problem will always be blokes with fat wallets who want to win trophies. Prod sports was a cheap category before it got Porker GT3'ed. Good luck with it and keep us up to date with progress.

Yeh, it is a problem with blokes with fat wallets and all types of racing.

The advantage that we have is that the class isnt a big national thing, it is only in Victoria, and been running this way for 14 years. So there is no real incentive for people to throw mega dollars at the class, it is not going to get you to supercars, or national TV coverage. For that you go to other classes, that kind of keeps the mega dollar cars out of the class.

The 2 litre capacity limit meanst that you will never get GT3'd in this class.. There will always be the capacity limit to stop big expensive cars coming and making your cars uncompetitive.

Sounds like fun, but you'd never get an MX down to the minimum weight (let alone with a driver in it...)

I assume you need a C3 licence?

Otherwise, the entry fee sounds like good value, even if you did come last in every event.

It's hard to see MX5s coming last. Their sites shows best times at Winton are around 1:35. A cheap, stripped down old MX5 with a bored out 1800 up against Escorts, Fiat 124s, Datsuns and Corollas could be pretty good proposition.

Looks like fun ... sort of 4-pot dodgems on bitumen. There's a fair few door scrapes in those photos. Best to buy your cages and harnesses first.

There really arent many car scrapes... Everyone pays their own bills, so no one wants to have to do panel repairs, but it does happen rarely.. Our racing is all very good natured, as we arent running high budget motorsport.....

I agree that a stripped out MX5 would be quite compteitive. In fact, we have a member selling one of his two MX5's, it already has a cage, hard top and bits, it is pretty much ready to race, only after about $7000 or so for it... (it is an import and cant be road registered....) He is going to race his other one.

To race you need either a C3 licence, or AASA (the cams alternative for club motorsport) have their own C3 equivillant for about half the cost, and that is also sufficient....
