Thanks to great people and lots of the help my new motor is in.
Still some issues to sort with a leaky injector, some custom ignition wiring, plus changes to the intake and exhaust to sort and lots of little details but it should be good to go by the end of November. ... looking forward to chasing down a few people at the last MX-5 Cup round this year :-)

I really want to get into mx5 racing next year.
Most likely the MX5 cup and MRA events.

Is it possible to use a street registered vehicle and fulfill safety requirements?

Next step for me is to get lower and a better seat.
Currently running a old sprint jnr.
Car also has a BD bar but I think that will be changed too.

But I believe it will have to stay a bolt in half cage so I can keep Rego.
Stupid city apartment living.

Just wondering if any regulars are also running while being street Rego or is it really a dedicated track toy kind of dealeo? ?

The turbo rocker cover must be worth a few extra kw's David.

Mark. I've been thinking the same haha from what I can gather a half cage is OK however you might need the brace from the top bar to the passenger footwell, bonnet pins, electrical cutoff switch and maybe a few other little things. I'm probably missing a few things though like race suit etc.

Thanks mate.

Yeah the other bits I'm cool with.
Car has pins, extinguisher etc etc.
I would need an ignition cut off but again should be easy enough.

The ROPS and getting the seat low enough are my biggest issues I think.
Wish I was half a foot shorter :)

I am around 184cm so I think I might have to remove the rear humps like they do in the States.
Hopefully not though.

I am 186cm, and was able to fit ok with some custom side-mount brackets (done by Mania), on a Sprint V, which effectively mounted the seat almost directly to the "humps".

Damn, I thought it might fool a few people into thinking I had gone to the dark side! (ie put in a turbo)

Remember that MX-5 Cup races are run at events under AASA permits, so you would need to satisfy their log book requirements, which I believe are not as strict as those of CAMS. Suggest you have a look at the AASA website to see what you can find, or contact the MX-5 Cup committee to get some guidance.

Dweezle regarding street legal race car: yes totally possible, there was a couple of them a few years ago including mine. I drove to the track my first few events – gave it up after sweating buckets driving down one hot weekend, also my teeth wouldn’t stop rattling from the drive down on the hard suspension.

The issue for driving a race car on the road isn’t so much compliance with race requirements, it is more with the RMS or whatever they are called now. The roll cage needs to be certified and lap sash belt must be retained as far as I understand it to drive on the road. Totally possible. Evil weevils car is fully certified. Tow hooks I imagine would need to not extend beyond the car too.

Regarding requirements for AASA race regs: there is a document on the club site here with info on what you need to do. Half cage is fine (again my first event was with a half cage) although full cage is recommended. As far as I know both MX5 Plus half cage and BD bar are fine (even without the diagonal brace).

You will need to get a AASA licence – no big deal, you need to have done a number of sprints or sprint format club days. Also need a logbook for the car, again no big deal, they don’t pre-scrutineer it for the logbook the way CAMS does and you take the pics yourself.

But be aware, they will scrutineer the car closely for race events, the Wakefield scrutineers particularly do a pretty good job. So make sure you have good safety gear and the car is well prepared.

My email is cpd@tag.com.au Feel free to hit me up for any other questions you guys might have.
Cheers
Craig.

And I should add, the last round is just under 4 weeks away. Plenty of time to get everything sorted (licence and logbook can be done in less than a week), it is going to be a big weekend with 2 days of racing, drinks and dinner and plenty of prizes and loot up for grabs. Come and join us!

The best way to improve your lap times is going racing. ;)

Thanks everyone!!
Really appreciate it.

David would it be at possible to come by one day and test fit myself in your sprint to see if that height works for me??

I've done a handfull of super sprints and club sprint days so hopefully that will be enough.

I am just looking forward to running at the back and having a good old time. :)

Sure, no probs.
Those original brackets now support a Sprint V for the passenger, and the drivers seat is on Sparco runners, bolted to the front humps and directly to the floor at the rear, with the rear humps removed, as I needed adjust-ability in the seat so my wife can reach the pedals when she drives the car.
I reckon sitting in the passenger seat would give the same opportunity to check head clearances.

Regarding seats, i am about 185cm and am using a Kirkey 39 series Intermediate seat, as i have wide shoulders and dont fit inside most race seats shoulder-wise. Fits great under the armpits, hugs your ribcage and doesnt let you move, as long as you have a harness.
I do have this in 100% of the time (daily driver) and it is a pain to get in and out, but worth it on race days.

I am also interested in getting into MX5 racing, having been doing hillclimbs and the occasional supersprint for the past 4 years, racing the MX5 for the past year (had a S1 Rx7 before that).
What is involved in getting the car logbooked?
I already have a CAMS L2S licence, but would i need any more licences?

Cheers for any info,
Ken.

Have a look at what "mazmad" wrote a few posts ago. He covered much of the requirements for a AASA log book, and gave a link for the appropriate regulations.
For racing you will need either a AASA national license, or a CAMS race license. The AASA license is most popular with people starting in MX-5 Cup racing, probably because it is cheaper and a little easier to obtain. I have a AASA national license for racing, and a CAMS L2S for sprint type events.
For MX-5 Cup racing, you will also need to be a member of the MX-5 Club of NSW, or interstate equivalent.

Hi Chrons, I think I met you and your dad at a few Hill climb events. When you where running the RX7.
I was in the Clio and Silver MX5.
I have been looking at the Kirkey and Ultra shield Aluminum Seats.
How do you Find it comfort wise?
Could you do a round trip to Wakefield In it?
Do you run a back support for the seat?
I like how low and cheap they are but am worried that they are not FIA approved and have seen pictures of them bending in accidents.
Then again a ton of people in the States are running them with no issues.
The ones bending I assume do not have the required back brace.

Hi Ken
As David said, you will need a race licence separate from the sprint licence. CAMS or AASA is accepted at MX-5 Cup races. AASA licence is cheaper and more straightforward to obtain, as is the AASA logbook, also required.

Regarding your seat, I would call Winton or Wakefield (they administrate AASA) but if it is SFI approved, one piece, I would imagine it is fine.
