Obviously you have never dríven one on the track then?????

The times aren't slow and to drive them well at be at the front you have to pedal well.

If you want to race then go and race, Tbro has made you a very generous offer, I will also offer to help if you are serious.

If you want to run a MX you will be playing with much faster cars, that is just the way it is.

When I started racing in the late '80's I did the NSW super sprint series for a year, and did all right.

I then moved on to door to door. I was given a 180B coupe that I ran as a SSS in Street sedans, basically old series production cars. I was at the back of the field and got lapped evrey race. Did I care, no, I was going as fast as I could afford. I raced in street sedans for a couple of years developing the car and racing what is believed to be the only factory fuel injected 180B in Australia. It was still at the back of the field, but I wasn't quite getting lapped as much.....

As I got more dollars together I developed the car further and moved up to improved production, where I was a mid filed runner for a couple of years.

After that car I got my first Z and ran in Marque Sports, now Prod Sports. I ran in the old division 2, now 2F and ran mid field.

Next car was my old green Z, an outright car, but was always beaten by the clubmans that ran with us.

Any form of motorsport will always be won by the one with the biggest checque book at amateur levels, that's the way it always has been.

Unless you run Excels or the Pullstart series down south you will always be beaten by those with a bigger budget.

Does that mean you shouldn't run??? No, you will learn so much at the back of the field with how to deal with traffic, and also race craft as you learn to lapped to your advantage. You will also appreciate a lot more the back markers when you can play with a fast car, like all the guys in prod sports do, as has been said by tbro above.

Sound like more excuses from a gunner than a doer from where I'm sitting.

MX5 Cup. Racing at all budget levels, and more cars for next year.

No racing is cheap. But you can make this as cheap as you like.

I think the thread is what has happened to MX5 racing. In QLD there is little options and running around a track with cars that are 10x more expensive and silly fast just isn't the fun I'd be hoping to have. Even track days with the 1st group boys separated makes sense. Saying it's not a problem to have the slow and fast mixed just seems stupid and pointless. But you're right - I've not tried it, but probably won't if that the attitude of people who do.

I have, trust me there is, no level of how s#it they are to drive...... Top gun and I built one for fun, to run the one hour event. After a weekend in one, more than happy to never set foot in one again! Sold it the week afterwards......But everyone has there own opinion.

For some reason it's 0404 and I am awake reading mx5cartalk... I aim to give pscraq a go next year. I went and watched some racing at lakeside a few months ago it looked alright. I don't remember the natsoft times ( you can check them) but I think the back running mx5's were doing 65s and the front runners doing 58s. I spoke to some of the guys at the back of the grid and they were having fun. No one seemed to care what the fast cars were doing.
My car has done 62s around ls on AO50s... i can only do 65s on rs3's haha. Puts me at the back of the grid but means I can only get better :D or bin it :/
Anyway, see how it goes next year. The car is sweet, just need to get a race suit etc, which I can borrow off a few people...

You won't regret it. The NSW club site has some info about getting started, I am sure the QLD guys will help you out too. I ran around at the back and had an absolute blast, as long as you have someone to dice with - unless you are after the $5 trophy - it's great fun.

There's no question that the MX5 racing scene has changed over the past 10 years, but there's still a lot of opportunities to race your MX5 on a fairly small budget (relatively speaking).

Yes the Prodsports categories have evolved, but there's really no reason why you can't race with them, especially here in QLD (as guys like Terry, Fastor Pastor & Sonke have done). There might be a question over the eligibility of a few cars, or the inclusion of the "Invited" cars, but anyone with enough money could build a fully legal 2B car that is just as quick so it's a moot point really. I ran an MX5 with a stock motor (105hp atw) for quite a while and managed to mix it up in the midfield at places like Lakeside, and racing in a mixed class field really doesn't improve you as a driver in terms of spacial awareness and even using the quicker cars to your advantage at times.

I've raced in many different categories and many different cars, but the most fun I've ever had has been dicing door to door with a couple of MX5's for lap after lap after lap. For me it's always been as much about the social aspect as the racing, and the post race banter after those epic dices is priceless. The Prodsports guys have always been very helpful and there's no shortage of free advice and tips if you need them. Hell, I was essentially spectating last weekend at QR (whilst performing my DSO role) and I ended up jumping under a car and changing a gearbox on Saturday afternoon just to get the guy onto the grid on Sunday.

If not Prodsports then get into the Modern Sports Car events, or the Wakefield, Winton and QR300 events?

In short, don't be put off by not having the fastest car or the biggest cheque book, just get in a have a go and maybe you'll convince a few more to do the same.

Well, I'm almost convinced. If I get my car sorted and doing a few decent times on the MX5 QLD track days then I'll strongly consider it too!

At least then I can speak from the perspective of "I tried it and I thought it was......"

By all means, go along to a meeting or two, speak to the people involved and get some first hand information before making any decisions.

BTW, I meant to say that mixed class racing DOES improve you as a driver, but I can't seem to edit my post above :)

Just did the 1 hour on the weekend with my son. It was my third race and his first. We blew the strategy, but survived the attrition to finish 14th. Had my best scrap ever.
Both of us had a ball. All I can say is have a go. And we'll done to Sonke on his first run as well.
