Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
I can only comment on why I'm no longer running an mx5.
Money, to run a 2F NA mx5 middle field is big dollars, unless you have a lot of talent.
While my car handled and stopped well. It lack power, my 1597cc 100 hp was not going to cut it. I didn't feel like spending 10k plus on a mx5 race motor was money well spent.
I was asked to run with PSCRAQ, but pointed out running 2 seconds off the back of the field, was not my idea of fun.
So I weighed up my options, tried Excel cup racing. Good hard running, but the cars handle like poo and changing wing mirrors and panels every time you go out.... Well it's not for me
Had MSC or rules as such, had been set up here in QLD, I more than likely would still be running in an mx5.
The way I look at it is MSC puts the production back into production sports car racing.
Sorry if it seems soft but getting lapped by high HP cars is not my idea of fun. Just my 2 cents
So moving forward....
PSCRAQ changed it's eligibility list. So I can run my skyline track car. So I've got a car that meets there rules and is a full 4 seconds quicker a lap for ten grand. "Cheaper than a stuart motor", more than likely, quicker and cheaper to run as well. But we will see
I'm even more wrapped, with the QR300, can't wait team "porn star racing" is already set and work has already started on the boat. Also QR has set a min lap time of 1:22 to keep the really quick cars out of it. Big thumbs up.
Still do I miss my mx5 hell yes ... maybe not so much when it's raining. It's nice to have a roof sometimes
I think sometimes we all like to throw stones, I've done it.... But as much as things change, some things still stay the same I.E.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
PSCRAQ haven't changed the eligibility list to run skylines. The CUE one hour eligibility list was changed to allow these cars, not sure why as they are touring cars and the 32 and 33 at least are FIA homologated to run as touring cars, so the 33 is eligible for the CUE One Hour series but not PSCRAQ events.
PSCRAQ will only let cars run that are on the list as per the cams manual, http://docs.cams.com.au/Manual/Race/RA17-Group-2B-2F-EligibleVehicles-2014-1.pdf.
The R33 will more than likely run in QR Outlaws category or at CAMS events as an IPRA car if it meets the rules, including 36mm restrictor for turbo motor.

Matt,
The R33 is on the new list, I contacted the club. Sorry if this upsets you.
I double checked as well, but I guess they want more numbers racing. I'm not to worried any way. More than likely I may only do one or two events. QR300 is the one I'm looking forward to.
But, this is the email I got back.
Hi Jeff,
I'm a member of PSCRAQ,
I've sold my mx5, but I'm now tracking my R33 GTST Skyline, (pretty much stock), I did note that there maybe a chance that, they maybe allow to run next year. Is there any chance I could run?
Regards Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I have attached the most recent eligible vehicles list for Category 2 vehicles and your vehicle appears to be on that list so I would say “bring it out and have some fun”.
Regards,
Jeff

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Well if that's the case then that's the case.
The CAMS list doesn't show it on the website for the 2014 manual of motorsport, however the NSW sporting regs show it. More of the confusion in the catergory that isn't helping anyone with building a car.
Ah well might bring out my Charger for a run then......

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Not sure what your particular gripe with the Ginetta specifically is when you come from the state that change the rules to suit their own Lotus agenda all of the time. Besides, when was the last time someone ran one in a Prod Sports event? None have run this year.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
Probably because you can't even register a Ginetta in Australia, and they let it run in 2B, there were a couple at P.I 1 hour, and I definitely don't agree with sh*t box lotus Hondas running, like I said before that was the beginning of the end for prod. Sports.

Yep it's 100% corrupted Platinum/Black VISA racing now.
You can't actually register any of the GT3 cars as they arrive many of them are even LHD.
But you ask for any sensible modification to be approved and it's "NO that's not CAMS approved"
NA Turbo's which go well - BANNED
NA/NB/NC with non mazda engine which go well - BANNED
NB can only have the factory turbo, yet the RX7 can swap from factory twins to Singles.
NC FI - BANNED
they don't want MX5's to turn up, that is what they will get. I did the mixed race with the sports
sedans last year 110 kph extra speed on the main straight at SMP I would be doing 190 kph and
have three cars go past nose to tail at 300+ it's a bit real. New extreme class will give the
sports sedans a run for their money at least sports sedans are held back with a minimum weight.

Re: Whats happening to the MX5 racing??
So, where are we at 6 months on?
I bought a race ready car at the start of this year (a competitive 2B spec NA). So far, I have run:
MSC round 1 (sprint round) in January;
MX5 Cup rounds 2 and 3 (at MRA);
Wakefield 300.
Overall, I'm pretty excited about MX5 racing in NSW. The MX5 cup is well organised and run, and we have been getting 10+ cars every round from memory. Huge thanks to Craig, Luke, and Deckspeed as they are doing a great job supporting the series and all the new drivers - there is always a new car or two at every round.
Most of the cars in the MX5 Cup seem to be built to either 2B or 2F spec, but it really doesn't matter as the cup runs time-based classes.
I have to say, I would still prefer a set class rule but I'm having a good time racing the MX5 Cup series regardless. I am not running the championship anyway this year as I am still learning the car. I guess I could race MSC if I was interested in rule-based classes, but the BMWs are very fast and realistically, they are out of my league in the little blue beast. Besides, the W300 proved that endurance racing is tough on the car and that, plus the large entry fees for the 1 hour MSC endurance rounds, has dríven me to the Mx5 Cup rounds instead.
The drivers are all great, and there has been little in the way of contact or argy bargy. The spirit is great and there is generally always someone to dice with at your speed level, whatever that may be.
I would be interested to hear how others feel things are going in NSW so far this year, in particular compared to past years...?

Has the Cup Stagnated ?
I know people have worked hard on it, probably very hard.
Wakefield 300 - 13 cars (some of these came for 300 and raced as well)
MRA Round 2 - 12 cars
State Round - 11 cars
Depending on your definition of customer cars 7+ of these cars are closely
aligned to the primary sponsors and are attending to be social/loyal as much
for the fun.
Hope I am wrong and lots more MX5's leave the shed for next rounds.

It takes time to build momentum, with people resurrecting cars so they can return, or potential new racers taking time to be convinced it is suitable for them. The organising committee can use any help they can get, to put out the MX-5 Cup message to potential racers.
FWIW, I plan to be there for the 2 remaining rounds, and know of at least one other supersprint regular who also plans to come along.

I think last year it slowed down towards the end of 2013. Wasnt many at the last MRA in September.
hope it doesnt do the same this year for you guys.
Im getting out of MX5 racing due to a few reasons - so if anyone was thinking of getting into it, my car is a bargain
