HVAC is short for heater ventilation air conditioning

I pulled it all out today (waiting on someone to come and degas the AC before I pull that out).

This should make it easier for the front leg to go down the windscreen and forward of the dash bar, and the windscreen support bar to go down rearward of it. I will then trim the dash skin to fit as well as I can. Fingers crossed.

The cage is done and car is home.

I highly recommend Dave Ferron of Competition Fabrications at Kippa Ring for both his craft and communication. I provided Dave with some photographs and described what I was looking for and and where I wanted various parts of the cage to sit. He asked me to visit at key points to check that I was happy with fitment, and in between visits, he sent me photographs of each stage to review before he welded them out.

Dave's welding was all done with TIG except for some difficult to reach spots that were done with MIG, and it all looks very nice.

Dave builds chassis for WTAC cars, and 86 series cars along with cages for rally cars. He believe he competes a Datsun in gravel rally.

Next step is to figure out how to get the dash in again. Windscreen pillar support bars are going to make this rather 'interesting'!

I will take some more once I have got it painted and the seats fixed in place. These some of the last few progress shots before I picked it up:

All of the stock hard top bolt locations are accessible. The front leg runs through where the side mounting points for the dash bar used to be, and the dash bar is bolted to new tabs - this means the stock blower and heater fit if needed.

How much does the cage weigh? Looks pretty substantial to say the least. Nice work!

Main hoop and stays look indestructible! :shock:

I thought that by comparison, the side bars were more modest - did you consider doubling them up?

Good question! I should be able to work it out based on the per meter weight of the tubing.

My initial plan was double door bars too, but my understanding is that they need to attach to the hoop and front leg. Because the hoop in mine sits on the shelf, there’s no lower second spot at the rear to attach to without being too high, and at the front if the bar was higher or doubled, I would struggle to get my 6’5 self in.

I can relate to that, and I am nowhere near your height!

My cage only had a single, but as you say, it went to the floor and attachment would not have been an issue. Since I bought the car with the cage, I rolled with the single (and a couple of other compromises).
