When I asked about Track insurance at Shannons they said they don't like doing it. It gives people confidence to go past the safe edge and they find it's really not worth it for them. He said it's usually $2-3k per year on top and do think he stipulated it had to be CAMS. I don't remember his name and that was a good while ago. I'd just give them a call. I remember dismissing it out of hand due to the cost.

Right. Didn't realise it'd be such a huge amount on top. It's probably good if you're doing some serious racing, but for the odd track day here or there, it's probably not worth it.

Either way, will still give them that ring tomorrow (hopefully) and let you all know what they say about track insurance.

What's food got to do with getting stuck in cars whilst driving about? :P

I can tell you that this doesn't cover track days - no matter if there are instructors or not. It seems more intended for the "how to brake in the wet" type basic safety courses (ie. nothing where you'd be likely to damage the car).

There's lots of track days that are run as \"driver training\" because it's easier to get newbies to come along and experience driving a track (and make sure you get enough people to pay for the track hire) and because I think the CAMS permit is cheaper.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thats rather untrue, I personally know of a claim payed out by Shannons on a car that went into the wallat Oran Park on a car club training day. Not saying they didn't complain about paying though.

But suggest you make your own enquiries.

I'd be really worried if some of the guys we race with did have track insurance. They're crazy enough as it is.

When was that? I was told last year that I was welcome to claim, but they wouldn't pay it, even with a letter from the organisers to say it was a driver training day. :P

Right. Just got off the phone to Shannons. The guy I spoke to said that the clause we're referring to is for exceptionally old cars (like 60+ years or something). His explanation of it was that it's more for old classics that get dríven on the track for display purposes/photoshoots/etc.

Don't know whether he was giving me the run around or what have you, but those were his words.

Also, the quote I got for my own insurance was $2249.75, which is huge compared to what I pay with Just Car (about $1250). Will need to requote in a few weeks time and see whether stuff just got entered in wrong or whether that actually is my premium if I go with Shannons.

Anyway, back to the OT, it looks like it's more a matter of not going too hard on the track and all will be well. Shame no one has set up something like this...
