Ditch the CAMS events & go AASA...those guys actually WANT you to go racing, not putting obtacles in your path.......and a RACE meeting, as opposed to only a sprint, is only $210 instead of approx 180ish just for a sprint.....license is only 200pa as well......

At the VMRC rounds (sports cars, under 2litre SS or SuperTT, the latter 2 with hardtops only), you get 5 races of at least 6 laps (most typically 2x6, 1 x8, 1x10 & 1x12) and 15-20 min practice & 15 min qual sessions, all for only 210!!! Why would you run a sprint with all the CAMS BS, and only a fraction of the track time??

As of this year (2007) national sports sedan rules now allow front-engine 2 seat cars, such as MX5, to race , and the the the Under 2litre SS assocn of Vic allows 2litre turbo cars to run with a 36mm restrictor, and min weight car+driver of 1250kg. This is to compete against Nat aspirated 2 litre cars of 780kg......the turbo cars have only about 40-60hp more than the top 2litre spaceframe cars, yet 50% more weight! But it provides good, close racing at times within 3-4 seconds of GT3 Porsche cup cars. A highly developed lightweight NA MX5 would be quite competitive in 2 litre SS, but may struggle for outright, given that even with aggressive weight reduction, you will still be approx 150kg above min weight with cage + driver.

Sports car class is essentially 2B/2F, and runs against MG's, 944's some porches, Mort's mosnster V8 MGBV8, Tr8 v8's, S2000, the odd westy, etc. NA Mx5's can be quite competitive, especially at winton!

SuperTT can be with anything from sports cars, Commodore cup cars (they are sooo slow!!!), old touring cars/supercars, sports sedans, etc. The AMRS is the national AASA series, and has SuperTT TV coverage,t elevised on Fox Sports & SBS speedweek (you may have seen my yellow/purple Mx5 on there for the calder round!!). National rounds are $450 a round to enter, but half of that goes toward the excellent TV coverage pack...guarnateed 30min televised, ususally 1-2 full races + highlights pack)

With 1270kg race weight (240kg of lead!!!- a family of 3!!!), 36mm inlet restrictor on the turbo, VVT 88000km old internals from my roadcar, except for cast Laser/323 pistons (lower CR), up to 24lb boost, rev limit of 8100rpm, buzzed to 9300 a few times!, it has run consistent times of 1:33's at winton, 1:03's at Calder, 1:44's at PI and has the following performance measured with a $25000 Vbox on cold tyres on 35 deg day:
0-100 km/h 4.37sec
0-160 km/h 10.48sec
0-200 km/h 15.18sec
0-400m 12.57sec

And it hasn't missed a beat all year! Gotta love the Zoom-Zoom!!

So give up on the sprints & come racing!!! Especially those in Vic, where there is a dearth of Mx5's.....There is one other to join the ranks of 2LitreSS next year, but we need more...i look on with envy at the swarms of Fives' running inthe qld & even NSW races.

So get that cage in (under the hardtop cage is OK, for ALL racing i have competed in)...sprints seem to be more pedantic on the 50mm rule rather than race scruties....go figure. Get an extinguisher, 3\" harness & remote battery isolator and have the time of your life!
