Different suit types are made of different materials.

From memory there is cotton, wool, proban (which may or may not still be in use) nomex type suits that are common. And then you get into the multi layer suits of different compositions as well.

The SFI rated suits and kart style cotton type suits are a very different material to the nomex suits that are generally two or three layer and FIA approved. And nomex can have different FIA ratings depending on age of suit, and expected purpose of suit.

kart suits are very different to circuit racing suits and then in the world of drag racing they have up to 11 layer two piece suits, depending on the category.

Even between two and three layer suits there will be differences in materials used, and again, shiny nomex versus not shiny nomex may require different cleaning methods.
