Im just saying running lower pressures are beneficial, and it isnt just my car that it has worked on but some friend's cars (GTiR, Formula Vee, Westfield, RX7....)

If you have a tyre which can withstand heat, pumped up with air and has a stiff sidewall, there is no reason to be running above 30psi (cold) on a tight track such as Winton, im sure its also the case with the MX5...

I have attached a printout of my tyre temps after the first track session at Queensland Raceway on 21/05/12 (weights are in KG tyre temps are in F). I didn't get any after my last session, but I think that I got the tyres a lot hotter because my times were 8 secs faster.

The tyres were R888's 205/50/15. One thing I have found out was that I did not get the tyres up to the operating temp of between 160°F to 220°F. Below 140°F and above 250°F the tire
may not provide sufficient grip (http://cache.toyotires.com/sites/default/files/imce/Spec_Miata_R888_Setup_Guidelines.pdf). So my mission next track day is to get the tyres after each session and see what the temps are compared to times and my feel of the car.

That PDF is a good find. It fits with advice I received recently from the local Toyo tyre technical manager. Optimal grip for R888 is between 70C and 100C. But you need to remember that by the time you get back to the pits after a cooldown lap, the tyre temp will have dropped and pressure fallen as a result. So target temps and pressures that you can measure yourself will always be a bit below optimal so that they ARE optimal on track.
