2b regs

Postby tang0_au » Mon Nov 30, 2009 4:14 pm

ok, so now i'm confused - reading the cams manual i'm trying to work out a build list of what i can do to an NA6 or NA8 ...
my first time build for log booking - not exactly straight forward stuff ...
anyway,

my plan was to:
buy either na6 or na8 and strip as much weight out as possible within regs - replace bonnet / boot / doors? with fibreglass items etc
full cage
some extra chassis bracing
seats / harness etc
new bushes all round, lsd, suspension etc
engine work:
low comp pistons, rods + associated bits
turbo - undecided on which turbo/kit yet ...

however, it seems i might hit a snag with this plan as the na never came turbo'd ? will i be forced to work on an NB chassis as it was offered as a turbo model ? - but i'll need to use factory inlet / exhaust manifolds ...

anyone been through this process able to shed any light ?

thanks in advance

Who are you going to run with? Figure out what class/category you want (eg what suits your budget best), then work within the rules of that class.

2B regs (and 2F) for that matter are quite clear in what you can and can't do. You appear to have read the CAMS rules which is critical. For a turbo charged car to be eligible for 2B, a turbo model must have been produced by the factory. In the MX5s case, you can only base your car on an SE or SP. That also means that you must use the exhaust manifold and turbo from that model, so the factory IHI for the SE and the GT2560 for the SP with the manifold that has Mazda stamped on it. So you cannot use an AVO or Flying Miata turbo kit - must be Mazda. The body must also be the same.

Production Sports Car racing in Australia is based on the 2B and 2F classes however more general events such as the MX5 Challenge and FOSC events will accept 2A class cars which an NA turbo falls into or an NB which doesn't qualify for 2B or 2F. Building a 2A car does limit where you can run.

My green NA race car has a turbo and I can find more than enough events to run at without doing any Prod. Sports races...

But if you want a turbo race car that can run with Prod. Sports there is always this option...

I guess it comes down to how much money you have to spend Lotus are a lot more expensive and less reliable compared to MX5.

Probably a tough decision.

As Lou says, do you want a $40k car or a $200k car......
