Vic IM240 testing - possible slots available mid Jan 2021
Reposted from another forum in case of interest to someone on here:
Have been informed (from a mate who needs testing done) that ABMARC are back up & running with IM240 testing in Vic.
They have dates in Jan & Feb. From what I have been told they require 4 cars a day to make the test viable for them. If they do not get the 4 cars (or someone to pay for 4 cars slots) they bump everyone back.
They have a date for Jan, (15th from memory), they have 2 cars booked in, but need an additional 2. So if anyone is ready to go please contact ABMARC to book in.

I think that’s pass or fail as well. Be good if it was free like Sydney.

Well, that's a lucrative little scheme that they have there.

Think so, as that was Vipac's approach - doubt it will have changed.

I don't think it is a money-maker due to the costs involved. Not huge demand for it as shown by the inability to fill slots.
Vipac was good. He ran the test 4 times for me and offered me a cup of tea. Cost I think was less than a grand.

VIPAC charged me in 2014 $715 which was quite reasonable.
Huge overheads and a dedicated employee.

Bit of an update:
Apparently difference between Vic v NSW is 'the way of capturing the emissions are different. Vic bag the tail pipe, so there is no chance of exterior contamination, while NSW just sensors the tailpipe and you may get contamination from fumes from fuel tank / other engine fumes'.
Yeah, guy running it at Vipac was super helpful - he even used to do personal presentations during the evening at some car clubs.

Apparently for $1265 you get one run, with the result being the three numbers for your engineer to interpret. No report, no tune time, no multiple runs, pick the best one.
Businesses with dyno and gas equipment who researched setting up for the test say it was several hundred thousand dollars to meet Vicroads requirements.

Re: Vic IM240 testing - possible slots available mid Jan 2021
ABMARC have increased their IM240 testing cost to $2500 including GST. They are planning on doing IM240 testing in the second week of Jan 2022, possibly for a couple of days, to reduce the Covid backlog. No further IM240 testing dates are scheduled at this time.

I think the above limited slots for testing and the prohibitive cost would be a huge deterrent to have anything emissions tested in Victoria. But then sending a car interstate for testing will likely end up costing more after factoring in transport, etc.
Best not to mod your engine in Vic and get caught.

Wouldn't be surprised to see even bigger EPA fines given the high cost of testing.

Ceased NSW IM240 testing
Posted yesterday on another forum by a NSW certifier:
Confirmed today TfNSW no longer offers IM240 testing, but is rigid in its requirements that ICVs pass it.
