G'day all, In the last three years I've averaged about 2500km a year (now at 7500km total) and probably less this year. With another car as a daily driver (and a motorbike) it doesn't get much use, as my initial plans when I bought it didn't pan out. So I'm thinking or selling it up, and my other vehicles and getting a BRZ or 86 as a daily and to cut back on rego and insurance costs. So my question is, has anyone else regretted selling?

Coming at it from the same direction, just re-registering mine, only done 2000km this year, 3000km last year.....

Many of us have MX5's which are 2nd (or 3rd) cars which don't get much use. Our NB probably does about the same k's as your car, but every time that we do use it, the rewards justify our keeping it.

Your thoughts about "consolidating" to save on the overheads of rego and insurance are something that I guess we have all considered. The important consideration, however, has to be the depreciation that you're likely to suffer from selling your current cars. At around 3 y/o, they would have already copped a fairly savage bite. The new 86/BRZ will also depreciate the instant that you drive out of the showroom as they no longer enjoy the status that they had when first released. With this in mind, the annual outgoings per car of (say) $1.5k are quite a bit less than the depreciation outlined above. OK, depreciation doesn't cost you until the time when you sell the car/s compared to an actual annual outlay to cover rego and insurance, and these costs will be halved if you're only paying for one car.

...and then, more importantly, we'll miss you beautiful people on MX5CQ runs This alone should justify keeping your MX5, plus you can't replace the joy of open air motoring which doesn't come with the 86/BRZ...

I'm often contemplating the worth of keeping my SE when it's used so little. But then we spend a day like yesterday for our 38th wedding Anniversary . Drove through the Adelaide Hills out to the Barossa. Had a beautiful lunch at Salters (Saltram Winery), bought some wine and drove back through the vineyards and hills, stopping off in Hahndorf for a coffee and a walk along the high street. Sunny skies, mid twenties with a cool breeze and the sun setting as we neared home. Just perfect.

Days like that, I don't care if I only drive it once a year ..... no other car would give us what this one does.

Thanks for the info, I'd be looking at a 2017 BRZ/86 as I don't need a new one, and they seem to be only a few thousand more than what I'd get for my ND. My other car I bought used so the first owner took the massive depreciation hit on that one. Fiats depreciate more than an Alfa!

As for open air motoring, I totally agree but the amount of skin cancers I've had removed recently is telling me otherwise.

First - no 4 wheels will replace 2 - full stop. I don't ride motorcycles but that's obvious.

Second - what pro's do you feel the 86/BRZ offers over the ND enough to make the change worthwhile?

Also ... have you dríven a BRZ or 86? Be interested what you thought compared to the ND.

Don't do it! get a BMW 135I, or at least go and drive one and see what the fuss is about.

I always regretted selling my Clubman. Hindsight is perfect after all. Nothing I bought afterwards ever came close to the same enjoyment. It's why I'm back in an NA now. I don't drive it very often and there's the cost of having insurance on rego on something not being used but I don't think I'll ever be selling again.

H plates and Third Party on my NA have reduced the annual costs to inexpensive.

I may keep the motorbike, solo registration and insurance is not much at all in QLD.

I can fit my mountain bike in the boot with seats folded down and wheels off. And keep the sun off my head. I could just leave my soft top up but that defeats the purpose of a MX5? Also maybe occasionally someone else (small) in the back seat.

Yes, I nearly bought one instead of my ND but my rose colored memories of my NA8 were to strong.

I drove a 2017 BRZ last week at a dealer near me, it "felt" very similar to my ND, but higher dash, wider cabin and surprisingly, a better shifter.

Many on here would disagree and many keep hard tops fitted all the time, but I tend to agree with you. Though I drive more often these days with the top up than I use to, for various reasons including some removed skin cancers, if it wasn't for those occassions when my wife and I enjoy a drive with the top down such as we did recently, I'd prefer a hatchback.

I tended to leave my hardtop on my NA8 during the summer months. As I found it just too hot in the direct sun, especially when stuck in traffic, which is most of the time in Brisbane now.
