Sounds reasonable enough Dann, but old folk like me think that Motor sport should be compulsory!

If it was to Joe Public then I would vote a resounding NO! I don’t want my racetracks clogged with mobile chicanes. There is enough people on them already who’s only prerequisite seems to be plenty of money, and almost zero talent..

Motorsport competitors are a massive minority, with good reason.
It’s very expensive, time consuming and pointless for someone who has no interest in exploring the limits of their cars, which is the overwhelming majority of the population. (Seen how many Camry’s are out there on the roads?)

I’m all for new or more tracks, but trying to facilitate that by forcing normal citizens to take to the track makes no sense..

Yes, true everthing that you say. It's kinda interesting how in Norway or Sweden or Finland or whatever, where there is lots of ice, kids learn to "drive" from around the age of 12. They have one of the lowest road tolls per capita, per km dríven, despite the treacherous low traction conditions. People here are driving worse than ever before, they won't go over 40kmph unless there is over 2 km to build up speed.

I wasn't being serious either, please don't take me literally. Interesting discussion though.

Certainly not for existing drivers, it's hard enough trying to get the morons to keep left on a motorway!

Yeah, I put my kids through a defensive driving course after they had their licenses for about 6 months. No bent cars yet. When is the best time for new drivers to do a defensive driving course?

You need to know what to do if you lose control in a vehicle and trying to figure that out yourself the first time it happens to you on the road is not when you should be doing this.

I'm not saying we need to be as comprehensive as the Finns but they learn to drive in all conditions and how to handle losses in control.

We should at least make every driver experience loss of vehicle control in a controlled environment and education on how to handle those situations.

I don't know anyone who's walked away from a defensive driving course and thought it was a waste of time/money.
It tends to humble many people and make them aware that they're not the awesome driver they thought they were.
If more teenagers were made to do thees courses we'd probably reduce their death toll a few % since they'd recognise when they were about to lose control or how close they actually came.
