Apparently only 75% of SPs survive
According to this Carsales.com ad <https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Mazda-MX-5-2002/SSE-AD-5132100/?Cr=0> for a 2002 Mazda MX-5 SP only 75 survive from 100: 'RARE, 1 of 100 ever made...only 75 survive'. There have been threads on here some years ago re written off SPs, but didn't think 25% were stat write offs. Maybe things have changed!

No idea on the number still running but the 2 SPs on carsales have been listed now for quite a few months. Either the sellers aren't willing to drop their prices to get a sale or most obviously it appears no buyers are interested at the prices being asked.

I doubt if anyone knows the answer to how many are left.
Not many SP owners bother using the forum.
Perhaps Stan you might get an answer from the state MX-5 branches about the number of member cars that are SP’s.
That will only give you club numbers thou.
What about the rest of us that don’t belong to any of the clubs?( There’s a truck load of us that just enjoy our cars for what they are)

I can vouch for one SP. I might be able to get the VIN for a register if need be. RS2000 probably could too, and maybe NitroDann?
I am sure you and Mazda have. But only you and other aftermarket turbocharger installers have devalued the SE also.

UPDATE:
The SP in question is currently living in a shed near Dungog. I have dríven the vehicle in question. The vehicle is registerable, drivable, but most likely suitable only for someone looking to (1) turn it into a race vehicle; or (2) do an extensive repair. The car doesn't feel right, as though the body was not straightened well. This is an amateur's opinion.

Carsales is loaded with price tags representing how much it would take for owners to part with them. In most cases this doesn't align with what other people want to pay.
I am pretty sure after market cars only take money off their owners. Check the for sale section, plenty of 10K cars with 10K in mods selling for 10K. Dont get me wrong, I recently LS3 swapped a midyear Corvette and its a better car in every way, I just don't kid myself that its worth more than original one.
Speaking of original ones, do you think the SP at Mazda HQ counts as one of the 25% dead ?

People never used to cross shop SP/SE and NB turbo. Now they do.

I owned an NB before I bought my SP and cross shopped every aftermarket option available along with everything else in the segment. On other cars I also have many experiences going the other route which produced good cars worth no more than the original I started with.
In any case I don't think there is any evidence SP's have devalued at all in the last 5 years. You surely cant ask 30k for one, however a decent one sold recently for 22k. Lets say instead you took a 12K NB8B and spent 10k on it... you could build a great car but it would be worth (maybe) 15, while the SP is still worth 22. What about an original Low Km NA6 recently selling over 20K recently and people hunting the forum looking for them.... if you fit a turbo kit to a car like that you would actually halve its value.
Its just a matter of confusing what makes a car good and what makes it valuable. People are out there paying $1M+ for a GTHO, but I can build a Falcon 500 to literally run rings around it for 50 or less.... none of that devalues the original car, in fact all the imitation probably only makes them more valuable.
