So the battery in the boot of the 89 NA I just purchased is loose. It seems to be too big to fit inside the brackets mounted on the floor of the boot. Is anyone able to send through some pictures of the correct set up?

The battery fitted is a Century DIN53L CCA 500.




Is the breather hose lying on the floor there for the original batteries breather? Should aftermarket batteries have a place for this to fit too?

You won't need to use the breather tube if you have a sealed battery. A loose battery can easily dent the body.
This is a pic of my '97 which is the same configuration as your earlier model.

Its not a standard battery- the original was an AGM vented externally and the size and weight will also be different. Folks buy cheaper batteries and then make up mounts to suit e.g. see the photo of the 97

Thanks for the picture. I need to get a battery clamp then to go over the top. Where does the back side hook into?

I think if I trim some of the excess plastic off the base of this battery (the battery has moulded plastic bits sticking off the bottom presumably to suit some other OEM mount) it may fit inside the floor mounted bracket. It's testing to be in good condition so it would be a shame to just turf it. I'm not sure why anyone spent so much on the wrong battery ($241.00 at SCA < http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Produc ... 0-CCA/0803 >).

See the red bit with the holes in it on your car? Just below where the ground wire bolts on.

The factory battery tie hooks onto there, and the other side bolts to a long hook that hooks onto the triangular brace on the floor.

If it were me, rather than trim the battery to fit the floor brace, I'd remove the floor brace and just make up a new one from L section steel/alloy.


Or buy a generic battery tray and bolt that down trying to use the existing holes.

HKS dos stuff but If you cannot fabricate it yourself find a mate or a mechanic or auto elec who can do it for you but dont trim the case of the battery. You dont need to discard the battery.

I undid both of the battery brackets mounted on the boot floor and swapped them around - this made the battery space wide but not as long. Under the small one I fed a 75kg rated tie down strap. Refitted the DIN53L battery and strapped it down through the carry handle. Worked well enough to secure the battery in place.



I've also managed to source an original battery tray and clamp etc. which I'll leave in the garage until next time the battery requires replacement.
