Introduction

Hi fellow MX5-ers :)

When I was just a lad, (well, when I was about 11) my family had no money and vehicles, if any, were old and generally unreliable. The only member of my entire family that had money, and cars, was my mother's youngest brother Robert. He was a budding research geologist with BHP, and had graduated from unreliable British bikes (I remember and AJS and a BSA separately depositing oil all over my grand-mother's driveway) to unreliable British sports cars, which intermittently did the same. He had, in quick succession, a red MG-A, and then a BRG MG-B. My twin brother and I were completely bewitched with these utterly different vehicles, and especially with the famous second-gear growl of the MG-B. We nagged enough to get a ride in both, with the top down, of course, and came away even more starry-eyed.

For the intervening 50+ years I have followed my father's path into church ministry and relative poverty; as he did, so have I! I have never owned a new car, and most of my vehicles, with the exception of the current Magna Solara, have been old, high-mileage, unreliable, uncomfortable and beige, and, usually, all those attributes combined. But I have always wished that I could have had a sports car.

In the seventies I sublimated this passion into two wheels; I bought my first bike in 1974, and with a few years gap between then and now, I've had bikes as my 'just for fun' vehicles. Retirement, however, suddenly awakened the sleeping giant; maybe I could use some of my superannuation to actually realise my childhood dream.

So the search began, and the result is that last week I added Nicole to the Magna and the VFR in my modest stable of vehicles; why Nicole? Well, as the personalised plates suggest, I bought her from a lady named Nicole, and I couldn't think of a better name.

So, what's she like? Well, my wife and I are totally in love with her; she makes a trip to the shops fun! Acceleration is nothing like even the relatively leisurely pace of my 21-year-old VFR, but more than adequate to spot a gap in traffic, or 'buy' some clear road off the lights. After 4 years of a 3.5 litre V6 in my Magna, the fuel consumption is astonishing; 32.9mpg on our last trip. And handling and steering? Well, it's just like riding the bike, honestly; line up a corner and gas it and it just hangs on like a limpet.

Anyway, sorry to be raving on, but as you can understand, I'm having a ball with this car.

I guess, I'm not quite up on all the folklore and designations, but it's a 2008 model, with leather seats and appointments and the electric roof. I'm in Wollongong, so I've got lots of lovely roads to carve up! Plus, a trip to Newcastle the day after we bought her gave me a chance to try her on the Old Pac, here at Road Warriors.

That would be referred to as an NC1 PRHT (power retractable retractable hard top).

You made the right choice for an affordable sports car which you can go touring in and enjoy top down motoring. I dips me lid to the British bikes and the MGB which was one of the vehicles that Mazda took cues from to make the first MX-5 ( NA)

Congratulations on your recent purchase. For all of the research that I did before buying my first MX5, the advice that I remember the most is 'Get used to smiling more often and allow for the extra expenditure on Sunscreen'.

We were at the shop a few minutes ago, top down and ready to drive off when older English gentleman stuck his head in the roof and asked, "How long does it take to put the roof up, I've been thinking of buying one of these, I used to have an MG-B?"

so I showed him!

I have had plenty of very fast cars and the mx-5 is certainly not one however has the biggest smile factor by far.
This forum and community is the friendliest I have been involved with in the 16+ years I have been around car enthusiasts, there has been a few times that the willingness to help others on here has made me feel lucky and proud to be associated with this community, never be afraid of asking questions on here (usually after a search).
A friend I hadn't seen for a while stuck his head in the garage the other day and saw my MX and said "what are you doing with that?" In not such a nice way I said "that has done more km this week than my WRX (highly modified) did in the last year of ownership and the whole car owes me less than the WRX gear box plus Lisa (wifey) can drive it"
That he couldn't argue with, I reckon you couldn't of chosen a better car to enjoy in retirement and wish you all the best with both.

A small single-car garage and two cars and a motorcycle posed some interesting space considerations, but with a some judicious searching of the internet, and the amazing resources of my local motorcycle shop, I scored one of these. You ride the bike up onto the rail, unlock it front and rear from the floor, and then wheel it around to anywhere you like.

It's so good I can even fit the Magna in with the bike; the Mazda has room to rattle!!

welcome to the forum. ive had a few of those early british sports cars and I think when you look back at reliability issues you will be glad you waited and never went down that path.

I think you have scored yourself a nice car and a mx5 or any mx5 is a pretty hard car to beat for value and enjoyment. congratulation on your purchase and I wish you many smiles per miles :wink:
