In a nutshell, this new technology, standard in the next Mazda 3, doesn't affect speed, or acceleration, but reduces jerk, thus smoothing cornering, including those little tiny steering inputs when you're going in what you think is a straight line. Apparently the sensors can now recognise a tenth of a degree of steering input and tell the computers to reduce or smooth or increase torque as appropriate depending on what you're asking the car to do.

By the way, for the real tech-heads, the method of varying torque is nearly always merely by reducing ignition advance.
