Today I met the first person I know to have started modifying his (aka her) brand new ND before taking delivery.

interested to know what they are doing to it?

On our 2l Roadster demo we have put MCA reds, 949 17x8 wheels, 215 AD08R's and a Goodwin super street exhaust and midpipe. It really is a very fun package!

Seat covers.

They have other cars with rather more modifications.

Seat covers are not a modification.

Their other cars make up for that.

Would mods like wheels and exhaust void new car warranty?

Wheels are easily swapped so probably not an issue. With all the emissions stuff in cars now I'd imagine that exhaust mods (for performance, not replacing a damaged section) would cause issues.

What spring rates did you go with?

What are people's views on the exhaust who drive the demo? I would like to put the same exhaust on my ND but I am concerned it would be too loud? It would be nice to hear one in Victoria.

Whilst not wishing to cause anyone here any angst, and not wishing to lift the lid on the canned worms, could I please ask anyone who has purchased a 1.5 litre engined car if they wish they had waited for/stumper up for a 2 litre engine?

I have a 1.5 roadster. Given that I paid $1,000 for the MZD unit (the base roadster radio head unit looks kind of stumpy and weird), it would only have been another $1,500 net for me to get the 2.0 litre so it would have been neither here nor there. To be honest, I had already decided that I wanted the 1.5 and didn't even test drive the 2.0.

After a month and 2,000km (including a drive from Melbourne to Sydney) I don't regret it at all and don't feel that the 1.5 is underpowered - and I came from a 225kW/400Nm twin turbo BMW 135i. It may be a bit undertorqued compared to my BMW, but I probably just need to adapt my driving style and change down a gear or two.

There's a video somewhere of Randy doing 1:36s round Sandown in his 1.5. That'll maybe help you decide. The car seems to be loving it nearly as much as Randy. The only apparent downside is front brake pad wear, which would have been the same in a 2.0. They both need different pads for dual road/track use.

Personally I reckon the 1.5 and the 2.0 should be considered to be different cars rather than better or worse than each other. Although at GT level the 2.0 is only 3% more money!

I agree, quite different characteristics that both have their appeal

The super street and midpipe is certainly louder but not over the top. They are loud on start up as the revs are held higher but quietens down as the revs reduce. My other cars are pretty loud so I may not be the best judge!

oldpete I have both 1.5 and 2.0 on the shelf and not far away, come and drive both and see for yourself

I had planned to purchase a 2L but ran into a 1.5L demo at the right price. I didn't test drive a 2L until after 5,000kms of 1.5 ownership. I like the torque in the 2L but like the extra revs available in the 1.5L, I also think the stock tires on the 1.5L are better.

If I was comparing RRP to RRP I'd stump up for the 2L but for the price I got the demo for it was an easy choice and I don't regret it.

That said, if Mazda release a higher-powered version of the ND, say 200hp from the factory, I'd definitely trade in for that in a heartbeat.
