NC depreciation following ND release

Hi guys

I've been reading/researching for a few months and thought I should sign up.

What are your thoughts on the market price of the nc following the nd release? Dealers are currently asking $35k+ for late model nc2's. Surely they'll be offloaded for mid to high 20's once the nd hits showrooms? This would presumably flow on to private sales and the nc across the board.

I'm asking as I'm in the market for a nc1, and was holding off for winter bargains. Now I'm considering holding out till the nd is released.

What are people's thoughts? I'd love to pick up a black/red LE, or even just a low km soft top with enough change left over for swaybars, but people are still asking crazy money for anything <100,000kms. As hard as it is, is it worth waiting till September/October?

11 years too old for finance ...

that will hit them about as hard as the ND. Combined looking at a fair old drop on them.

Plus as more of the 160,000+ k examples go on the market prices will be lower.

Maybe the thread should be re-titled to "Depreciation of all MX-5s following ND release". Wait until this time next year - NCs will be under $10k and they'll be paying you take an NB or NA off their hands. :)

^ Yeh, I think the prices will drop a fair bit but it might take a while for people to change the listings and you might find a bargain by just finding the right seller which could avoid the wait.

Start calling around to probe for a motivated seller or someone who actually wants significantly less than listing price as from my experience that is often the case especially if they have been trying to sell for a while (after you call someone, call them again in a month if the ad is still up).

I'm not one to low-ball as I know how frustrating that is as a seller. Negotiating is fine but I don't feel comfortable offering 13 for a car listed at 18. I'm definitely still keeping my eye out for the 'right' car within budget as I'd rather not wait, it will just become much easier when prices drop. I almost picked up an 05' with removable HT for 13.5, but walked away due to questionable history (no books) and cosmetic issues.

I imagine that when NC owners start trading up for ND's, the farmiliar listsings "will be traded in on X date unless sold prior" will start popping up and that's where bargins will be had. Untill then I'll just keep refreshing the carsales listings :D

Not saying it's not, but note that here in Aust usually the roadster/convertible market firms just prior to Summer, but after the Melb Cup LWE is out of the way. Of course, it might be different this year if there's a glut.

If you're prepared to wait, definitely wait a month or two after the release of the ND, you'll save at least $5,000 IMO, especially for the NC1 which is currently retaining its value because it looks like the latest MX5 (the NC2).

I agree that that's usually the case. I've bought all my motorcycles at the start of winter and sold at the start of summer to take advantage of this fluctuation. This is why I planned to pick up an NC1 coming into winter, but as you said I think this year will be different.

In saying that, if anyone wants to offload their NC (softtop, manual, leather, black trim, any colour but silver, LE and/or mild mods prefered) I'm willing and able :D

There was already a long thread on this topic. ND is not going to have much much if any impact- i.e. no more than any other car where a new model is released. Its all been said before- those wanting an NC will buy it and still be in the order of $10K in front at least for a low KM car. If the ND was an absolute bargain and had all the" fruit" which it does then maybe- but its not shaping up as tape breaker. I reckon it will run out of puff pretty quickly. I don't think the NC owners need to get too concerned. People sell cars for what the market will bear and there is quite a few NBs and NCs out there and they don't just dive because an individual makes a silly offer or does not want to pay the going price.

Not sure all that many NC owners will want an ND. Different car aimed at a different market. Happy to be proved wrong though.

We (Mornington Mazda, SE of Melbourne) have two NDs available in the first batch of production for Australia. Both GTs, both autos, one Meteor Grey, on Ceramic. Stop me and buy one.

All MX-5s have been a re-work of a good idea - front engine, rear drive, two seat, two door, light weight, convertible, sports car. It just gets massaged for current performance, safety and consumer requirements within Mazda's available production schemes. The ND is just the latest incarnation of the same thing for the same market.

Did NCs ever come in white? I'm tempted when the price dibbles down closer to the end of the year.
