How long did it take you to sell your MX-5?

Postby locksmack » Wed May 20, 2015 9:05 pm

Hey Guys,

I'm interested to know how long it took you guys to sell your MX-5 after advertising it for sale (carsales, forum or elsewhere). What model was it?

The reason I ask is that I've had my NC1 PRHT for sale for nearly 2 weeks and while I didn't expect to sell it by now, I did expect to have an enquiry or 2, but so far nothing! I feel it is reasonably priced and in a great condition, but maybe I am just used to more 'typical' cars that have a larger buying market.

Cheers.

Mx5s do take a really long time for interest. Mx5 is not a everyday car. There are specific buyers for these cars. While a 4 door sedan car is more likely to sell quicker. Trust me it will sell. Just need patience for the right person to come along. Ive seen mx5s stay on the internet for months and months. Also depends on your negotiation and ad skills

How long is a piece of string?
You are asking a question with so many variables...

I'm asking for real world examples of how long it took for forum members.

Used car sales and used car values have taken a dive over the past few years.

NC's are not a highly sort after car and there are heaps of used ones to choose from. Sadly to get a quick sale you'll have to make the price more attractive, otherwise you'll have to be prepared to wait a long time for the right buyer.

NA6 LE. Advertised in December 2013 for $6k, sold for $5.5k in April 2014.

What baring does this have on your car? Next to nothing I'd wager.

Only couple of days. First looker bought on the spot two years ago.

Mine was NB series 2 manual
Brighton car
50 k kms
Documented Mazda service history
Mint and unmolested
Immaculate
Classic red

Buyer tried An offer but I cut him off and said if I didn't get my price I'd put it in storage. He was smart enough to know what he was looking at and paid top dollar.

I'm working on an oil rig out of Vung Tau, Vietnam and don't expect the same response from my similarly credentialed NC.

A highly modified one never sold, thank goodness.

Five others (1 NA, an NB8A and 3 NB8Bs) each sold within 2 weeks. Started them at a low enough price. Didn't use the pre-formatted descriptions. Usually included lots of decent pics.

As they were priced low enough to attract offers I didn't discuss lower offers (great fun just to say "no, thanks" and was able to have more fun with the "people" who wanted to buy them at more than the asking price for their esteemed clergyman uncle while they were working on an oil rig and not easily able to keep in touch with me. I still have a $1,000 credit card deposit from one of them!
UK since return: Standard NC2 (horrid), C200K, ND2 BBR, NC2 BBR200 (loved it), NC BBR300 (better than BARMY), V-Special, turbo NB8B (my 84th car)

I sold my NA6 without even listing it for sale. Just responded to a WTB on this forum.

If you'd like some specific suggestions about how you might sell your car quicker, you could try posting a link to your online ad.

Six days: NA8 Clubman in Melb.
Few weeks: NA6 in CBR - issue was finding someone to view it, then first viewer bought it immediately.

Time taken to sell is relative to price and market (Supply/demand).

How many other similar cars are for sale in your area? Is your priced to sell quickly or priced to sell at your price? Can you hold out or do you need a quick sale?

Yes I have answered a question with more questions.

Looking at your carsales add there are 29 similar MX5's, yours is 8th in price. There is one with similar KM's for $3k less and one with less KM's for $5k less! However some of the higher priced ones have more KM's than yours (good selling point). I would say that it is priced in the top end of the market but untill the cheaper ones with similar KM's are sold yours would not be looked at.

Those (if I am talking about the same ones) are not hardtops.

http://www.carsales.com.au/cars/results ... iloType%3D[Private%20seller%20cars]%26%28Make%3D[Mazda]{%26}%28Model%3D[MX-5]{%26}Badge%3D[Roadster%20Coupe]%29%29%29%26State%3D[Victoria]%29%26Service%3D[Carsales]%29&limit=24&sortby=Price

When filtering by 'Roadster Coupe' (with all NC versions) there are 14 listed, and mine comes in at 8th most expensive, however there are no cars cheaper than mine with less km's - this is why I think I've priced it correctly.

I'd be keen for any suggestions anyone has on making my ad appeal more. Cheers.

There are only two things you can do;
Wait longer
or
Drop the price.

If you wait longer without dropping the price the value of the car will drop and it will be even more expensive relative to other cars for sale and you'll get less or no enquiries.
