Phone mount on track?

Postby YanMa YatTai » Tue Apr 07, 2015 10:44 pm

Wondering how do you securely mount your phone in car when on the track?

And what do the scrutineers think of your mounting efforts?

I have seen some questionable phone mounts and people seem to get away with it. Things like those suction mounts - I tend to think these can come off any moment. And I have seen the "secondary" fasteners being nothing more than tape.

I would like to use the iphone with Harrys Laptimer for recording with the inbuilt camera and GPS for now until budgets permit upgrading to GoPro or the like, and external GPS.

The method I use doesn't allow for video recording so it might not be useful for you right now, but if/when you switch to a different recording method, this one works for GPS positioning and also g-force measurements using the internal accelerometers.

I use a thin plastic case around my old phone, a Galaxy S3. On the back of this case I've put 3 strips of something called Duralock on the back. It's a bit like velcro, but it's plastic and doesn't have separate sides, sticks to itself etc. 3 1" strips on the back of the case, with 3 strips stuck to the windscreen right at the top. The phone sticks there and won't be coming out with a really hard hit, or the windscreen shattering. It's in your peripheral vision, so you can check the red/green split indicators etc with Racechrono without having to look to the sides/downward.

Because it's stuck firmly to the window, accelerometers are reasonably accurate for cornering G's too. Wouldn't rely on it for precise details, but when you see a midcorner g-force change from 1G to 1.4G sustained after you switch from road tyres to semis, you've at least got some quantifiable change to look at.

You can see the positioning in this video from when I failed miserably at Lakeside last year, can see the split colour indicator etc too.

Do you have a roll bar?
If so something like a rammount is what you want - rammount.com
Also if you want to use harrys lap timer for well... lap timing - its worthwhile investing in an external GPS - the internal iPhone GPS really isn't fast or accurate enough. I use an xgps160 and it works very well.

Yeah I have a rollbar and also found rammount. Considering it as it's definitely secure however the camera position and access to the screen are limited. External GPS is on the todo list. I have a Qstarz Btq818xt but they don't work on iPhone so need a different one.

Just wondering what other options are out there that can mount closer to or on windscreen
