Honest opinion on 89 Na A/C

Postby Benn » Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:56 pm

Hi guys,

So that time of year is upon us, that's right its when our partners/friends complain about the near "apocalyptic" temperatures the cabin in the mx5 reaches. After hearing lines such as "its too hot, lets take my new car with a/c because its comfortable" it has occurred to me that yes taking an extra shirt to change into when arriving at a destination is probably not ideal.

I have had a search and looked around on Google but cant find someone actually say how the A/C in the Na6 is- in a warmer climate? If it helps I own a little 89 eunos.

I have assumed if i go ahead with it that I will need to replace most of the system; so money is not the issue.
I just would rather not spend the money if I was to end up with an A/C system that is for all intensive purposes a waste of time.

So if u have A/C in you NA6 let me know what you think.

Cheers guys,

Ben

Hi Ben. My aircon works fine hard top or soft top, but just don't expect freezing cold with the soft top, rather 'comfortably' cool on a hot summers day. I hope that this helps, Cheers NAS.

My air con works great now that I got it re gassed. Iv also now got window tint (darkest legal) which definitely helps reduce the heat/glare and improves the air con capabilities. Its not the coldest system but even with my soft top going home on days these last few weeks while we've been having these heat waves in QLD have made the journey much better and alot more comfortable. Fan has only been on 2 or 3.

Best thing I ever done was the window tint and get the AC re gassed.

On really hot days - roof up, all three windows down seems to work pretty well.

Take that NB owners!

Having a MX5 with no AC and the hardtop left on, it does get hot, however the roof vent helps. A very good add on is the Project G vented 1/4 windows.

The A/C in my early girl, 89 is great. 40 degree day and roof on it is comfortable, as it is with roof down, just get burnt to a crisp....

The last time I got mine serviced it was a reasonable cost for new compressor, not rebuilt, evaporator and regas through Automotive Plus.

It is quite nice to be able to drive the car in summer without having to wring out the shirt you are wearing.....

Just spent a few bucks fixing my system and will definitely add it is worth it!
Not the freezing polar climate I would like it to be - but top up on a hot day is quite pleasant in the car - works better with hardtop (of course)
Just about to get windows tinted to help out a little

Don't overlook a great plus with a/c- being able to clear windows from condensation

There have been a few for sale recently. From what I've seen they go for around $200 2nd hand.

That's a massive advantage, I second that. Summer or Winter.

Benn no issue with them whatsoever in the rain. However I have removed them only because the material they are made of puts me in a different class in Time Attack. I wish I could have kept them in to be honest.

A group buy of these was arranged a while ago http://www.projectgla.com/gvents.html.

When I had an 89, found adding a radiator top cover improved the A/C. More air flow going through the condensor/radiator instead of some being lost by going over the top or sides.
