Mazda Oz never imported the 1.8 L NC
so surely they wouldn't pants us on a 1.5 only.
Who would buy a 1.5 MX5 ?

The current Wheels magazine withe the ND on the cover speculated that we'd only get the 2.0L version - that's my $1 bet too.

Since we are all speculating, ...
we know that Mazda Aus see the MX-5 as a niche model which is still a "Nice Little Earner" through the high margins available with premium pricing, but times have changed, and unless they can compete on price with the 86, it is unlikely the ND will sell in similar numbers to the NB and NC.
So, I predict there will be a 1.5 litre "poverty" model, with cheap (steel?) wheels, no foglights etc that is priced in the mid $30k's on road to compete with the 86, while the 2 litre model with the fruit will be about $10k more.
Mazda Aus can then focus their marketing on the convertible advantage, to offset the spec deficit of the cheaper model compared to the 86, and the high price of the top model.
Put it in the red book :-)

People don't do poverty pack anymore. Steel wheels on a convertible? foglights - meh
Base spec.... 16 inch alloys, cloth trim, no MZD (think Mazda 3 Neo)
Non-base spec ... + leather + MZD (bose) + bling

Intriguing to think of a 1.5 at 35K to take to the market. Maybe Mazda don't care, who knows.
As for base spec I would plump for Mazda 2 engine, interior, wheels, with soft top. The original NA spec was a RWD 323 with a sexy body, the ND could follow tradition and do the same. Mazda Aust probably won't care and might just bring in the higher spec. That would also be keeping with tradition.
The other intriguing thing is the speculation of a RX-7 coupe on the ND platform.
PS fer chrikey sake make the front badge small for a small car and what is the little cutout under the left headlamp?

2.0L would be nice. Don't think the 1.5L will be enough to really motivate buyers, but we'll know soon enough.

I agree with this. They claimed (pretty sure it was from Mazda Aus but I could be wrong, probably am...) the oversea's model will have the 1.5 and we will get the 2.0 with 134 kw and it will start from around $37k. I mean sure they could just be speculating too but Im pretty sure they wouldnt put that in one of the biggest car magazines if it didnt have some truth about it. Id be prepared to be that our version of the ND will have a 2.0.

Even at mid $30k's the 86 will eat it in sales
GT86 was drive-away $33,700 and the GTS86 $39,500 - manual versions - I see the lesser powered model being a 'dead weight' around Mazda's neck if it comes to OZ

2.5L turbo with MZD, heated/cooled/massaged/lumbar support-adjustable leather/alcantara seats with neck warmers and provision for a six point harness, parking sensors all round, rear cross traffic alert, GPS, flappy paddle auto, Soul Red with black bits as in the 25th Anniversary NC at $29,990 please. There ya go - sorted. Where do I pay my deposit?

Just wish Mazda would stop the Bull Dust and camoflauge, and just release the details!
