Hi all,
I have decided I will probably hang on to my NC forever, as we are in love. However, my one current bugbear is the seats.

I have the black leather interior, which in my opinion is awful. The seats were never great to begin with, and have always been uncomfortable on long trips (which I do reasonably frequently) and now they are probably starting to sag as well. I get a sore back after an hour or so, every time now.

so, I have looked at different options:

1. - Changing the seats for racing seats - SAAS, Momo or Mazdaspeed. I was quite keen on this idea, but apparently it can't happen for a road car (as opposed to a track day only car) as the existing seats have airbags in them (the race seats don't) and you cannot legally remove an airbag.

2. - Get sheepskin seat covers - again, I was quite keen on this (despite reading different opinions about them) until I found that, of course NC seats are not standard sized, so you can't just buy off the shelf items, which leaves only custom made ones that start about $1k - which I think is ridiculous for seat covers.

3. - which brings me to my latest option - getting the seats re-upholstered - possibly in suede or velour, and with better padding! Has anyone else had this done? if so, what sort of cost? and can you recommend anyone here in South East Queensland (preferably Brisbane)?

Interested in your thoughts/tips/opinions.

We had custom made sheepskin covers made in Melbourne for our NC.
Cost $500 made and fitted
They are great on hot or cold days very comfortable if you get some don't get the cheep short wool variety or black coloured as it will go greenish colour with age

Weren't Reccaro seats an option for the NC at one stage?
Maybe you could get a set from a wrecked vehicle?

If you were to fit covers be mindful of the curtain air bag system. (I know I sound like Mr M.)

I've had a one piece fiberglass Sparco Evo II Plus in my car for a few years now and have never been picked up yet. Having said that - watched me get done in the next few weeks.... It's more comfortable than the stock seats but I bought it as I track the car and needed more helmet room.

Charlie Brown replaced the leather in his car and it looks way cool, the leather quality in the standard seats is pretty crap and gets harder with age as my darling girlfriend reminds me on every trip back from Wakefield !! A softer more supple leather in the center of the seat would probably solve the issue so I'd have a chat with an upholsterer and see what they suggest. As Reggie said, the Recaros are Mega $$

I agree with Red dragon lambs wool is a great option. Best to deal with someone who can supply what you want either full fitted or partial. I have dríven a few NCs and find the seats hard . A pro can offer some options for height of nap colour etc.i have 3 cars with driver seats in lambs wool all much better than standard. I can recommend Blacksheep Australia ( Ringwood)) He has been working in sheepskin for many years. No problem in accommodating air bags.

Don't put up with a back problem. Silly as it may sound but how the seat is adjusted can make quite a difference.

Ps one of my cars has leather seats and the lambs wool makes for a plush feel and of course the fabulous qualities of wool cool in summer warm in winter and wears well.

Hello Magnum, I swapped the leather seats for the standard fabric seats, a lot more comfortable and you sit in the seat rather than on top with the leather.
Take a ride in an NC with the fabric seats, Paul

Will the honda airbags work on he MX5
I bought my NC2 fabric seats for $350 in great condition, out of a NC with airbags.
So they were a straight swap, unplug and plug in.
Be careful, some japanese NC seats do not have airbags.

They were - but they are hellishly expensive - even crap ones.

Plus, I know wrecked Mx5s are probably a dime a dozen in Sydney and Melbourne but in Brisbane they are as rare as the proverbial rocking horse poo and all the good bits get snapped up very quickly.
