I have just had some issues with my 01 mx5 o2.
The shop sent me the socket you are referring to, but since you need to access it from in between the gearbox and exhaust you will most likely need the short type tool.

Most places that sell single sockets should also have them.
I think mine came from Repco.
You can try just cutting a slot into a standard deep socket, but there's a good chance that it may splay out and slip once you put a decent bit of torque on there. (the proper o2 sockets are hardened like impact sockets)
or just chop the wires at the socket end and use a normal socket.

I just used a spanner, is that not an option?

With 15+ years of heat cycling they get stuck pretty hard.
Open spanners usually can't get the torque needed without rounding the nut. And ring spanners can't get over the wires.
Which is why I suggested cutting the wires, if you're replacing the sensor anyway there's nothing to lose.

Ahh I could get my ring spanner over the plug of the sensor for memory (sensor wasn't factory)

Mate, I think you're posting on the wrong forum. This is the car one.

lol @ using a spanner...
This is a SE.
its hidden behind the exhaust dump, near impossible to get to.
Ended up getting it just now, tough as buggerey to get to which was the real issue.

Burson Autoparts sell the socket.
If I remember I'll grab the part number on Monday.

damn nb8b, after trying 2 special sockets we had to just use a 22mm spanner due to its location the socket are pointless
