Building a track car rules/regulations?

Hey guys,

Im curios about what is required when building a tack car as a project.
Ive had a look on the willowbank raceway site as it is my closest track, and it does have some info but only things like "must have a tow hook, number on side, tape on glass" etc.
but when it comes to putting in an engine/drivetrain/seats/safety equipment, what exactly is required?

Things like solid engine mounts? Changing track width from factory?
Rollcage/seats/floorpan etc.?

Please excuse me as i have little knowledge on track cars.

Cheers fellas.

Best starting point is find what class you want to run the read the regs for that class.

Just for clarifications' sake, when you say Willowbank, you mean Queensland Raceway, yes? Because Willowbank Raceway is the drag strip, Queensland Raceway is the circuit. They are separate entities, both on Champions' Way in Willowbank.

If you mean sprints at the circuit, the classes are simple enough. 4, 6, 8+, or AWD. If you have forced induction, you go up one class. If the car remains road registered, you can enter street sprints. If not, Midweek/Open sprints are your only options. As for safety regulations, QR and Lakeside are both AASA sanctioned for sprints, not CAMS. So the rules are somewhat more relaxed. Roll bars etc do not have to be CAMS approved, for example. If you are referring to running door-to-door racing, the rules are more strict, but still not crazy. You must have a roll cage, you must have a bucket seat and harness, and you must have a HANS device from this year onward.

When it comes to supp/regs for sprints, it's pretty simple. The cylinder/induction rules specify your class. Everything else is irrelevant. I believe the sprints are self-scrutineered, so nobody will be checking your car over for safety. Make sure your battery is fixed in place, have either a window net or keep your window at least half way up when you hit the track, and wear long clothes and a helmet. Track width does not matter. Tyre size does not matter. Fuel type does not matter. Sprints at QR and Lakeside are pretty much open competition, the regulations really only come in with door-to-door racing.

If you mean the drag strip on the other hand (unlikely as it is) roll cage at 10.00sec quarter mile, and a parachute at 140mph. Otherwise no leaks, and general long clothing and helmet. ANDRA track rules are strict, if you break either of those times/speeds you will be asked to leave and not allowed to return until your car is up to scratch.

Can the '89 qualify for historic races now that it is 25 years old?

. What class would it run in?

, I can see the mx5 blitzing the historic cars. 8)

CAMS regulations are different to QR regulations. Hence building a car to QR Regulations may not be suitable for CAMS events.

Also worth keeping in mind that I think QR doesn't allow cars with cages anymore at the street sprints.

Not without a mod plate, no. The logic is that if it's a road car it needs to be roadworthy, and a non-plated caged isn't roadworthy. The specific rule states "3. If vehicle is road registered or road registerable must meet the roadworthy requirements of Qld Transport"

The same applies to non-sprint events, like the Downshift Circuit and Coffee events, happy laps etc. All cars have to be road registered and legal, I suppose since they don't allow helmets at those events, the cage could do more harm than good if something went wrong.

No, CAMS historics run different to a generic 25 year old rule. For a 5 to be eligible CAMS, or more correctly, the Historic Racing Commission would have to create a new category for them. Which would be done one of two ways, Group Sd for cars with no racing history, or a sub section of Group T for cars with genuine racing history from the years the category was built for of which none were raced until the late '90's in production or marque sports to my knowledge, and I have raced in these categories since the early 90's.
