Going to Japan in July due to some crazy flight deals. Really crazy.

Any one know if it's any cheaper buying parts/whole cars from the mother land?
Any suggestions for cool jdm bits to grab or car related places to visit?

Off topic again, but my flights were less than $600 return. If you're interested, I'm going with jetstar and their sale ends Friday. Don't mean to advertise, but I thought you jdm guys might be interested.

to be honest. the biggest parts you can get back with you will probably be camshafts in you luggage. but they are heavy suckers.

unless you have the ability to organise you own ems shipping from the parcel carriers there, then doing a big order isn't gonna be a benefit to you.

Car Make Corns is a good place to go for mx-5 specific parts.

UpGarage (used parts) and Autobacs (new parts) can be ok but it is really hit and miss in regards to them having any parts for your car. Most places that stock new parts have long since forgotten early model mx-5s and have moved onto the GT86, Prius and GT-R.

Also check with your airline first.

I seem to recall something about most airlines not allowing secondhand car parts.

That and also that things like shocks are a cylinder filled with high pressure gas, which may not be allowed on a flight.

If it is second hand and dirty then also expect to pay to send it for cleaning at this end.

I doubt its worth the effort when you can order parts on line an have them shipped. You might save a freight cost but you have to lug the stuff around and metal objects also might present a few hassles. Do the parts have to be declared?? You are not likely to get any special prices as a buyer and you have to go to the sellers to collect etc- do you really want to be using a holiday to do this? I would as someone else suggested check the airline or travel agent and see what are the rules.

Ahhhh didn't think of any of this, thanks guys. Completely slipped my mind that shocks are just a pressurised and flammable tube of metal.
Will definitely go to Super and Up Garage to check them out, because they look immense.

Get a JR rail pass, get on the bullet train and explore the country. It's around $300 for 7 days and you get to ride on most of the bullet trains, JR non bullet trains, and the JR subway system as much as you like.

Kyoto and Hiroshima are well worth a visit.

Get the pass BEFORE you go. Not available once your there and bullet trains are quite expensive.
