WARNING - Braided Fuel Lines = Engine Fire

Postby Si.G » Sun Feb 16, 2014 12:07 am

Hi everyone,

Had a bit of a of a shock today. I was moving my fuel lines around while try to get me hand into a gap and .......

Vrooomful - the engine bay is on fire. Not just a little flame a full on fire, flames surrounding the inlet manifold. Luckily my old fire extinguisher is on the shelf in the garage, which did not put it out fully, so next thought is to get the car out of the garage and get the hose on it. Thankfully it burns itself out.

So what happened.....

Moving the fuel hose knocks the cap off the insulator on the starter, the hose arcs on the starter, burns straight through the hose and bang you have a fuel fire.

SO FOR ALL THE GUYS OUT THERE WITH DUEL FEED RAILS AND BRAIDED HOSES ----> check your hose path, check your started insulator or change to rubber hoses.
So glad this did not happen while driving with the fuel pump on!!!!

You got lucky!

I have extinguishers mounted on the wall near each exit of my man cave, given that is directly attached to the house the consequences of a fire could be huge. Most people that have competed in motorsport for a while probably have a few out of date but serviceable extinguishers lying around so it makes sense to mount them where you can get them in a hurry.

I'm currently bending all the hard lines for my car and it's a pain in the @rse and I spent a bit on bending and flaring tools but the end result will be neat and won't flop around. The only flex line will be between the hard pipe at the top passenger side of the engine bay and the fuel rail on the top passenger side of the engine.
Street='94 with FFS Coldside. Sold :(
