Hi guys, so I have done hours and hours of research, and this seems like the most complicated and rediculous process.

I am looking for help from individuals who have undertaken this, not speculation or opinions from others who havn't.

What I want to do:
Fly up
Buy car
Drive back

Situation 1:
Go with seller to qld "rta" where he cancels rego, and i fill out the permit to drive an unregistered car home.
My insurance company WILL NOT insure it whilst it is unregistered.

Situation 2:
write up our own contract
drive the car back - still in his name
my insurance company WILL cover this.
post number plates back to seller, so he can cancel the rego up in qld
undertake the blue slip + green slip + nsw registration form here.

Have I missed something, as both these options are fraught with potential issues.
please help!!!

other info:
the car has current qld rego till 26th jan.
the car DOES NOT have the queensland safety cert - it failed due to a 1mm chip in the windscreen on the lower passenger side.

Hi Emily. I have done this before, and did it on an unregistered vehicle permit. QLD transport also require class 22 CTP insurance which would need to be arranged and paid for with your CTP insurer beforehand. In my case my insurance company covered me with fully comprehensive insurance for the trip by means of a cover note. With that said, I think this may be because I had a valid roadworthy certificate. If the chip is the only thing that made it fail the roadworthy, and it is only a 1mm chip outside the driver's field of vision, O'Brien glass can repair this for around $80, and then the roadworthy place could sign off on the roadworthy. O'Briens would do this at the home of the seller if they won't help you out.

I feel that for the sake of $80 or so this would be the cheapest and easiest option and also allow you to drive an insured vehicle home on a covernote.

If the car is in Brisbane I am more than happy to help you out with whatever is needed before you fly up.

So if I arrange a safety cert, get the unrego'd permit, get the C22 CTP insurance, then my car insurance will cover it for the drive back?

I'm not sure whether your particular insurer does but mine did (Suncorp). For you that would be Gio. You don't need to buy insurance with them you can just get a cover note and then insure with your insurer when you have done what you need to when you get home.

Arundel is on the Gold Coast. Still happy to help out if you need someone to be somewhere. I would look at flying into Coolangatta if you want to land closer to the car.

I usually ask interstate sellers for the Rego refund too, seeing as if they were selling to a local buyer they would transfer the rego anyway. Would probably only be around $40 back to you but would help pay for the permit. Obviously up to you though.

The permits are sold in blocks of 24 hours so you will need to pre-plan your route so you know how long you need it for.

Apart from that, I think your plan is correct

I think you are right that option two has less permits, fees and hassle. For me, the question I would need to ask the insurer, is who gets paid if you have an accident and the car is written off? Technically for the whole drive back and until you register the vehicle in NSW it isn't legally your vehicle.

The other consideration is, you could not register the vehicle in NSW until the seller had cancelled the QLD rego, so after you had sent the plates back you would have to trust that they could get into QLD transport ASAP (on a week day) and not leave you waiting. If you don't want to register the car in a hurry this may not be an issue.

Lastly is whether the seller will allow you to do option two, if they will it is a
Consideration.

Insurance co is happy to cover us as long as we have a document proving we are the owners.
Detailed bill of sale.

Owner is happy to do that, however I am risking having a car in limbo if he doesn't cancel it.

The rego expires on the 26th jan, does that mean I can re-register it here regardless if he has cancelled it or not?

I would imagine that once it expires you are free to do as you please.

The only thing with the insurance company is even if they agree to insure you, from my experience working for an insurance company, Total Loss settlements (if it is written off) can only be paid to the registered owner. Apart from that, seems like it would work for you. At least I can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't work. Unless anyone else reading the thread can?

Just did this myself with my MX5.

Did option 2 and you just post the surrender receipt back to the seller to cancel the rego on his end.

Bit of faffing around but well worth it for the right car!

Ok I think I'll go option 2.
Will obviously drive incredibly carefully, and hope no one runs into us.
Insurance co did say we would get the payment, so might follow up on that to confirm 100%.

It's a very nice car that is well worth this hassle.

I've done it 3 times, but the states in reverse order - bought cars in NSW & ACT and brought home to QLD. Process is the same though. It's easy and not as difficult as some like to make out.

Seller and buyer complete change of ownership paperwork just as though they are selling a registered car to a "local" buyer. This is the last you have to do with the seller. The seller can't cancel rego without handing in the plates, so keep them on the car, i.e car registered. When you get home you take the transfer of ownership paperwork along with your newly obtained RWC/Safety Cert (which you have had done when you get the car home) to your RTA/Transport Dept office, show them the interstate paperwork, hand in the interstate plates to the RTA, pay your stamp duty and rego and have the car then registered locally in you name. The RTA will then give you a receipt for surrender of the interstate plates, which if you can be bothered, you then fax these to the interstate Transport Dept for a refund on any remaining rego to be paid to you. Can also claim back CTP from the insurer too if you can be arsed.

Main things to keep in mind are that there is no difference for the seller; you need to take out your comp insurance before you collect the car - CTP/green slip will still apply to the car while it is registered; the interstate rego will "work" for you until you surrender the plates which is supposed to be done within 14 days... So no need to deregister the car and get a day pass or unreg vehicle pass which only limits you when you get home!

Seriously, don't over complicate it! Buy the car, drive it home as you would if you bought in NSW. The only extra thing you have to do is get a RWC or whatever the NSW term/equivalent is, and then sort getting the QLD rego refund if its worth it to you.

What NMX516 said. That is exactly how it is done. I've bought cars and bikes all over the country and the only difference is having to get a rwc here in Victoria and paying the rego. Insurance will cover you as long as the car is registered and you have declared all mods. With a months rego left they shouldn't ask more money from you to keep the plates on. I've also sold a couple of cars interstate as well and have never cancelled my rego.

I've done option 1 for Victoria to NSW, pretty much the same thing though. The seller and I went together to the VicRoads office. The seller wrote out the bill of sale, cancelled the rego and handed in the plates. I took out a temporary Vic rego (no inspection required because it still had a few months rego), arranged cover with Shannons and Scarlet drove it straight home from there with no plates, then next morning straight to the blue slip garage. Really it took less than 10 minutes at VicRoads to sort it all.

As for the current 'project NAB8'... probably want to finish putting it back together before selling it off!

You don't need to send the number plates back to QLD, just hand them in when you register the car in NSW.

Make sure you have a hard copy of Blue slip and green slip and a very detailed receipt from seller when you go to RMS to get the NSW rego.
