So after 5 months or so of owning my 10AE, I needed to leave it out on the street for one night. Woke up this morning to find that some lovely person had cut the soft top with a knife, right across the whole car. Could not believe my eyes. My very expensive pioneer head unit was in the car and I had forgotten to take the face off, there was a couple of tools in there, cds, change and NONE of it was taken. It would appear that they didn't even access the car. You have to wonder how some people get their kicks, they obviously did it for no other reason than a one second moment of excitement.

Luckily my insurer is also my uni job, spoke to the assessor today and they are going to cash settle me the price to replace the softtop (which is incredibly expensive because I can't find an aftermarket blue one) and I will use funds to buy a hardtop like I have been wanting to do for a while. Hoping to turn a horrible experience into a semi-good one.

Probably not much point in my post but just wanted to share my experience.

My soft top is rapidly declining in quality. New holes forming everywhere, wind whistling through them on the freeway.

Hence my post. I meant to add to the end of it, thanks; that will come in very handy for me when my softtop finally starts leaking in rain.

I know one guy in Brisbane who when going into a Restaurant or similar, leaves the windows down on his NC and the car unlocked - totally sick of having the roof slashed as well

When I cruise for coffee on weekends in my NA, I leave the roof down when I go inside, but all valuables are in the boot which can only be opened with the key

I do similar. If unlucky with rain, wet bum is better than ripped roof. It sounds like your interior boot release is disabled? Also note that a locked glovebox can be removed in zero seconds by someone in the know as they walk past.

The early na6 models didn't have an interior boot release, so more secure!

If you put the key in the boot lock and turn it to the left it disables the remote boot release in the car handy when you don't want your goods taken with the top down

Someone should make a soft top out of that knifeproof kevlar stuff.

Without proper protection Kevlar degrades in UV light.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I knew that fellow enthusiasts would understand! Went and bought a hardtop from Automotive Plus today. It is getting the glass removed tomorrow and then off to the paint shop. Looking forward to getting it fitted.

It's a funny old bit of the male psyche that wants to damage things.
I've watched people break the top off a plant on the footpath in city streets "just because it was there".
Maybe it's something to do with the male drive to 'assert' oneself, a kind of self-confidence booster that will help when he meets the next sabre-tooth tiger or Mammoth.
'Slash the roof' is the same reaction to the 'must break the radio aerial' syndrome.
I've never had that drive personally but I've known a few blokes that did, particularly after a dozen beers were making them feel bulletproof.
