Transport Minister Scott Emerson will today unveil plans to begin phasing out registration stickers on the family car and all other light vehicles. The decision will be applauded by the owners of the 4.4 million vehicles registered in Queensland that weigh less than 4.5 tonnes. From next month, the final annual cycle of new stickers will begin being applied across Queensland before they are no longer issued from October 2014....."This will bring Queensland into line with most other Australian states which have already gone stickerless," Mr Emerson said.

"It will mean a more efficient and effective method of registering vehicles and save up to $3.5 million a year in postage and printing costs." Registration labels were first introduced in Queensland in 1932.

Might save something else going up though, or something else we like happening being axes.

Not generally fond of pollies, but if we're to be honest we can't expect savings to be passed on when they're trying to save money.

Didn't go down in SA after they dropped the stickers ... but revenue from unregistered vehicles rose quite dramatically.

It is not uncommon here for renewal notices to not arrive since this system started and responsibility is lumped 100% on the vehicle owner to remember renewal date.

I know of several people who have not received notices (one a tradie with 3 business utes who didn't receive any notices for any of them!) who've been caught out and when they questioned the lack of notice, the rego department just blamed them and said they should have used the "App" !!!

Several of those people are my age or older and have never been unregistered or without fully comp insurance in 40+ years of driving ...

Can't happen soon enough Ducky, it's always been a problem that the colour of the labels doesn't match my car OR my fingernail polish.

And when they get lost in the post? I've had debit cards, licence renewals, rego renewals all lost before. I assume they won't be suspending the rule on leaving old rego labels on, it makes just as much sense now as it will when we go sticker-free. Remember the date, or face the consequences.

Well there's always a first time for everything, but I've never had a licence or rego renewal go missing in 45 years of car ownership living in five different states at various addresses within those states. I also manage to remember when bills like these are due...just in case.

Agree with Kevgoat, revenue from unregistered vehicles will rise. I am a car dealer and I reckon at least 10% of people I sell cars to do not have the correct address on their licence and are never going to get a renewal. Yes it is their own fault but I don't think they deserve a hefty fine

Whenever any of my staff want to drive a used car you have to check it is registered, every test drive you have to do the same thing, every time I value a trade in I have to look it up. Pain in the arse

Dealers don't get sent renewals

If people don't get a renewal because they haven't advised the authorities of an address change, I seriously doubt that the windscreen label will remind them that the rego is due. They are the same type of people who forget to renew even though they got a renewal notice.

Other motorists have been able to deal with it. QLD is one of the last states to do this. I dont think there really is a problem.

Like most changes, you get use to it. It's not a problem as long as you are organised, diligent and make careful note of renewal dates.

I recently had to pay my wife's rego without any renewal notice as it was down to only 2 days to go (way past how early I usually re-register our cars). Renewal notice arrived, but one day after her rego would have run out! Not sure if it was due to slow post or late processing by rego dept. Renewals usually arrive about two weeks prior to renewal date. This was the first late renewal notice I've had in 38 years of car ownership.

I might add that a couple of friends have been pulled over driving their cars a couple of days out of reg. The police were apparently polite and understanding about the problems with the system and on both occasions the police allowed them to pay immediately on their phones and once their computer updated the vehicle's details, they allowed them on their way. Probably some sort of note made against your license or something that you've been let off once so they are aware if they catch you again ...

Individuals are also supposedly covered if driving another person's vehicle that is found to be unregistered ... but from a couple of 2nd hand stories I've heard, the police have been pretty tough to deal with and convince that the driver had made all "proper" attempts to check prior to driving the car.

Depends on the type of day the cop's having who pulls you over I suppose ...

It's a shame that other payment options aren't available, similar to insurance and utilities, to pay monthly or quarterly by direct debit so that you know you are always covered ...
