Just under 200k on the car and motor. Thinking back, the old HLAs were probably shot at 175k. It was not a problem with clicking on start-up or idle. The oil has always been too good and too fresh for that sort of problem. Dismantling and cleaning achieved absolutely nothing. It was more the fact they they could not hold pressure under sustained abuse. The motor would feel flattish at high RPM after a lap or two. I'd come off the track after a session and there'd be a gentle threshing noise going on under the bonnet.maxgus wrote:Just out of interest.......how many k's on the mother?

And the car has done a fair amount of track work or had a reasonably hard life? Thanks

Two or three thousand laps, apart from that it's had a soft life.
I'm not sure why you're asking though. HLAs were only used in NAs. Mazda ditched them for solid lifters with the NB.

Bled brakes, huge thanks to Mrs Okibi for her pedal work.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Fitted new front rotors. The pads are ok(ish) but new ones going in next week before the track day.

Went to go pick up a compressor, misjudged the size from the photo. So I am currently hardparking at supercheap auto waiting for the bigger car....

Fitted new battery today. A little taller than the last one but at least the car starts and was under $150.

I think the parts say it all, CAS was leaking, first time under the bonnet of the 5 and i loved every minute of it, apart from the oil filter, other than that it all went to plan.

Yeah that first filter change is often a PITA ... after that, can only blame yourself if too tight

Never understand why so many people, mechanics included, tighten oil filters up so hard. So many of them never oil the seal either.

Couldn't put it in the boot and strap the boot lid down?
